But John Hennessy and Doug Krenz rallied the Bears to within 29-28 at the half. They soon ran up the score to 52-43 and romped. Dino guards Tom Sindlinger, Jerry Crawford and Skip Morgan all fouled out early in the second half. John Hennessy paced the Bears with 14. Doug Krenz added 11 and Jim Fisher 10. In the playoffs, U.B.C. won the crown with a 136-112 victory in a two-game total-point series with Saskatchewan, winning the first 78-49 and losing the second 63-58. The Thunderbirds averaged 73 ppg on offence and 58 ppg on defence. They were led by former Lethbridge Nationals Dave Way and Bill McDonald.
In the opener of the playoff series, UBC took a 38-26 lead at the half and ran away with a 78-49 victory. Saskatchewan coach Don Newton noted “we never picked off one offensive rebound during the opening half. With playing like that we couldn’t have beaten a junior high team today. UBC coach Peter Mullins noted it was “mighty nice” to take a 29-point lead. Bill McDonald led UBC with 22 points. John Cook added 14, Dave Osborne 12, Dave Way 11, Ron Erickson 10, Morris Douglas 6 and Steve Spencer 3. For Saskatchewan, 7-0 centre Orville Fisher scored 14, guard Dale Downey 11, Gary Goble 10, Robin Fry 5, Trev Treen 4, Terry Little 3 and Cam Gjosund 2. Newton said the Huskies nervousness was a product of UBC’s unique, springy floor. It may also have been a product of their flight into UBC. The Saskatchewan plane was hit by lightning over New Westminster as it approached the airport. The bolt ripped an 18-inch hole in the nose of the plane.
In the second contest, Saskatchewan won 63-58 after taking a 30-26 lead at the half. The Huskies appeared far less nervous. They lost center Orville Fisher to fouls in first half. Star Phoenix reporter Jack Sirrs reported the next day that he overheard the referee go the scorer’s table and say, “well, it sure took me long enough to get him out of there.” Saskatchewan shot .380 from floor and .780 from line. UBC shot .410 from floor and .650 from line. Robin Fry paced Saskatchewan with 15. Gary Goble added 14, Terry Little 11, Gale Downey 11, Trev Treen 4, Cam Cjosund 4, Pat Foster 2 and Orville Fisher 2, while Bill Hook and Dick Ruschiensky were scoreless. The Huskies were managed by Gary McMillan and coached by Don Newton. Ron Erickson paced UBC with 18. Dave Way added 13, John Cook 9, Bill McDonald 8, Dave Osborne 5, Bob Barrazoul 3, and Morris Douglas 2.
