        At home, the Bears defeat Manitoba 49-47 and then lose to the Bisons 67-61. …………………………………………………… In game one, Alberta prevailed 49-47 as Maury Van Vliet notched a putback rebound with 15 seconds to go and rookie Lance Richard hit an insurance free throw with 10 seconds to play. The Bisons hit 29-63 (.630) from the floor and 23-30 (.760) from the line. The Bears hit 22-50 (.440) from the floor and 21-28 (.750) from the line. Manitoba led 38-28 at the half. Jack Hicken led the Golden Bears with 20, before being hauled off the floor in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury. Garry Smith added 17 and Harry Beleshko 12. Alberta coach Steve Mendryk said a lack of depth was lethal. “The only we can handle this team is to run them down but how can you do that when you’ve only got five men you dare pit against their whole team?” Winslade paced the Thunderbirds with 21. The Bears also started Pete Stothart Mendryk summed the season by saying “the team played well. They never let me down. It was a close league and if we had not been injury ridden when we faced Saskatoon the last time, we may have placed third as we did last year. We have to take into consideration the fact that we were hit hard with injuries, especially with Hicken, and also that only three of last year’s squad were back this year. However, the prospects for the future are good, really good.”
