We were running in transition, we hit shots from the three, we were going inside out just great. We had them scouted really well.” Varsity Reds coach Erin McAleenan said “it’s the first time the program has been in the final in 13 years. It’s been the goal all season and we’ve face a lot of adversity, so I’m proud of how we’ve persevered. … I thought in the first half we were a little slow getting going and struggled with some foul trouble, but I thought we weathered the storm and had lots of people come in and hold the fort. I thought in the third quarter, we stepped up to another level. Defensively, we tried to limit their opportunities and offensively, I thought we got going in transition and shared the basketball.” Player of the game Jayda Veinot paced the Varsity Reds with 20 on 8-16 from the floor, 2-5 from the arc, 2-2 from the line, 8 boards and 5 assists.        In the final, the top-seeded Saint Mary’s Huskies captured their second consecutive title by dispatching the 2nd-seeded New Brunswick Varsity Reds 64-49. The Varsity Reds led 13-12 after one quarter. The Huskies led 29-25 at the half. The Varsity Reds led 45—41 after three quarters on a pair of late buckets by Erin Ingalls. But the Huskies played lock-down defence in the fourth, relinquishing just one field goals and two free throws. Tournament MVP and player of the game Alaina McMillan said “I can just say I’m proud. All season we’ve been saying defence wins basketball games, so we really made sure in the second half that we were capitalizing on that, we knew UNB is a talented team and they weren’t going to let up, so it was just getting the little things done, offensive boards, we got those blocks in the fourth quarter but that’s just because we were in the right position, and that’s what happens when you put the work in the whole year. … It was just getting stops. We have confidence in our offence and we know that if we get defensive boards and get in transition then offence will come, so it was really just capitalizing on getting stops and transitioning into offence.” Huskies coach Scott Munro said “we talk about defence all the time, that’s what we hang our hat on, and with about seven minutes left in the fourth it was still up in the air, which way it was going to go, and we just said ‘listen, we need our best defensive effort right now for the next seven minutes’, and that was the best defensive execution I’ve ever seen from our team, just a great job by everybody. … [McMillan is] a gamer and she comes up big in the biggest situations. She didn’t have her best day in the semifinal and I know she was chomping at the bit to get back at it today, and we put the ball in her hands down the stretch and she made some plays.” Varsity Reds coach Erin McAleenan said “I thought that we battled and continued to try to fight when shots weren’t dropping, and things weren’t going our way. … I thought we came out really strong in the third quarter, obviously to get a bit of a punch back and then in the fourth, I thought Saint Mary’s really stepped up their pressure and intensity. I thought we were playing a little bit tighter and almost playing back on our heels. A couple bounces, a couple calls didn’t go our way either, so it felt like we couldn’t make any in-roads in that last quarter.” Alaina McMillan paced the Huskies with 22 on 7-20 from the floor, 3-10 from the arc, 5-6 from the line, 3 boards, 6 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals. Clara Gascoigne added 10 on 3-12 from the floor, 1-4 from the arc, 3-4 from the line, 5 boards, 2 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals.
