In the other quarterfinal, the 6th-seeded New Brunswick Varsity Reds stunned the 3rd-seeded Acadia Axettes 66-60. The Varsity Reds built a 17-14 lead after one quarter on aggressive work on the offensive glass. Axewomen post Abbey Duinker picked up her second foul late in the frame and was forced to the bench, while Varsity Reds reserve hit a trey over top Acadia’s 2-3 zone to give UNB the lead. In the second quarter, Kristy Moore continued to push the tempo for Acadia and scored 13 but although the Axettes were prone to turnovers, they led 34-33 at the half despite late buckets by Claire Colbourne and Colleen Daly for the Varsity Reds. UNB led 51-40 after three quarters by capitalizing on Acadia’s lack of depth. Although Colbourne was forced to the bench with four fouls in the final frame, rookie guard Chelsey Collette hit a pair of critical buckets to ice the win. Varsity Reds coach Jeff Speedy said keeping the Axettes to a low total was the key to the victory. “Tonight, obviously … a pretty gutsy effort. We held a high scoring team and two very good offensive players (Abby Duinker and Kristy Moore) to 60 points. We have had a lot of games where we have had to score 86 to win and we can’t. We needed to keep the score where it is to win and tonight, we did that.” Melissa Foster was chosen player of the game for the Varsity Reds, while Rita Leila Sibo earned the laurels for the Axettes. Chelsey Collette paced the Varsity Reds with 10 on 5-8 from the floor, 0-2 from the arc, 2 boards and 3 assists. Colleen Daly added 9 on 3-8 from the floor, 3-7 from the arc, 2 boards and 2 assists. Finally I would like to thank my family and my ‘X’ family for all the support they have given me throughout this process.” Jones had been an assistant coach with the Saint Mary’s men’s basketball program for four years and was an assistant coach with X-Men basketball mentor Steve Konchalski for three seasons in the early 2000’s. In 2010 he was named the head coach of the Nova Scotia boys Canada Games team for the upcoming 2013 Canada Games, and he has instructed at numerous basketball summer camps over the past two decades. Jones has international coaching experience as the head coach for the Bahamas Baptist Community College for the 2005-06 season, in addition to time spent in St. Lucia as the head coach of the VideBoutielle Secondary School from 1992-96, and assistant coach for the St. Lucian national team from 1992-94.
