The Varsity Reds scrambled back, knotting the score at 60 on a trey by Leah Corby with 30 seconds to play. On the next Capers’ possession, Jahlica Kirnon drove to the hoop for a bucket while drawing an unsportsmanlike foul. She hit the free throw and then iced the game with two more free throws down the stretch. “Three in a row, well, it’s awful nice to win,” Capers coach Fabian McKenzie said. “We’ve had our ups and downs this season as a team and we pulled together when it mattered. We relied on a lot of veteran experience. UNB’s game plan was very solid and they played us tough, but down the stretch our veterans really stepped up and did the right things. … I hope everyone realizes this is not easy and realize this was a hard feat to do. What these young ladies have accomplished is amazing. I hope everybody else sees it and doesn’t take it for granted that it is that easy. It is not easy to win and winning three in a row is something. Finals are never blowouts. They are always close. For us it was the composure down the stretch and we played pretty tough at both ends. We had a few lapses during the game but got it done when we needed it to get done. I said ‘girls that is what is going to make the difference.’ The girls at UNB had never been to a final. We have and won it and know how to win it at the end and those kids got it done. Those kind of veterans, you can’t replace. They stepped up and definitely took advantage of them down the stretch and we rode them to the win.” Jahlica Kirnon paced Cape Breton with 17 on 6-13 from the floor, 2-5 from the arc, 3-3 from the line, 3 boards and 3 assists.
