In the semis, 4th-seed Memorial stunned top-seed Dalhousie 60-57. “That’s what makes it really special for us,” said guard Michelle Healey, who scored 30. “It’s our first time here, so we want to give it everything we’ve got and see how far we can go.” Healey hit 6-7 from the arc and grabbed 8 boards. “I knew all the teams were here and if there were any doubters about my MVP selection, I just wanted to prove to them that I can really play the game,” Healey added. Sea-Hawks coach Doug Partridge said his troops rode Healey as far as she’d take them. “We need to her to deliver. You don’t coach that. With about seven minutes left, there was a timeout by Dal and I looked at her and I said, ‘you do whatever you got to do’. She just delivers. She’s done all year.” Jenifer Devereaux added 10 for Memorial, while Angela Torraville nabbed 8 boards. Carolyn Wares paced Dalhousie with 20 points and 15 boards. Kathie Sanderson added 12 and Jennifer Offman 10. Each also nabbed 10 boards. The Tigers opened the first half with a 7-2 run and close out with a 15-4 outburst to take a 32-24 lead into the lockers. Memorial began the second half with 2-0 run and began to dominate the boards, even though post Judy Byrne was in foul trouble. “In the first half, they out-rebounded us on the offensive boards 13-6,” said Healey. “We knew that’s where Dal keys. If they get the boards, they beat teams. We really wanted to shut them down.” Danielle Moe nailed a trey for the Tigers with 55 seconds to rally Dalhousie within 56-53 but Devereaux hit three foul shots in the final 29 seconds to ice it. Memorial shot .415 from the field, while Dalhousie was .315. Dalhousie coach Carolyn Savoy noted “there was still 10 minutes left in the game and we were coming down, one-two passes and throwing up a shot. We stopped going inside where we were having a lot of success. It was part of the plan to go inside against Memorial.”
In the other semi, the UPEI Panthers edged the St. FX X-Women 70-67. St. FX trailed 68-67 when Abigail Tramble went to the line and missed a pair with three seconds on clock. The Panthers Hilary Watson grabbed the rebound, was fouled and hit both free throws to ice it. “It’s actually my second chance at it,” said Watson. “My first year we won it. We’re going to win it again this year.” Theresa MacCuish had completed a three-point play to bring St. FX within one and then pilfered the ball for a layup to give the X-Women a 67-66 lead with 1:08 to play. But Watson scored a hoop with eight seconds to play. Watson and Kathy Quinn each scored 17 for the Panthers. Angela MacIntyre added 14 points and 11 boards, while Charlene Woolaver scored 10. Theresa MacCuish notched 27 for St. FX. Abigail Tramble added 16 and 13 boards.
In the final, Memorial defeated PEI 60-57 to earn the conference title in their first playoff appearance. Michelle Healey paced the Sea-hawks with 20, including 14 in the first half, while nabbing 8 boards. Judy Byrne added 18 points and 9 boards. Memorial led 32-31 at the half. Jenifer Devereaux notched 8 points, including a pair from beyond the arc. Hilary Watson led UPEI with 17, including 13 in the second half. She also nabbed 9 boards. Jennifer Johnston scored 9.
