In the semis, the 4th-seeded St. Mary’s Belles stunned the previously undefeated host and top-seed Dalhousie Tigers 66-63. Dianne Chaisson paced the Belles with 24. Sharon Simpson added 18. Carol Rosenthal paced the Tigers with 22. Anna Pendergast added 21. The Tigers led 38-33 at the half as Anna Pendergast and Carol Rosenthal dominated the floor. But Dal inexplicably shut down in the second half. “The girls knew they were supposed to run, they knew they were supposed to press,” Tigers coach Carolyn Savoy told the Dalhousie Gazette. “We weren’t overconfident. I just think the girls started to think, ‘hey, they might beat us’. … St. Mary’s has been after our hide all year. It seems all they came to do was to beat us.” The Belles took the lead with four minutes to play and the Tigers froze in fear, repeatedly fouling the Belles. The Belles consistently took the option of inbounding, rather than shooting free throws and essentially ragged the clock until Karen McKellar iced it with a pair of free throws with three seconds to play.
In the other semi, the New Brunswick Red Bloomers dispatched the Prince Edward Island Panthers 88-58 as Laura Sanders scored 19, Joanne McLean 18, Leslie Nason, Lynn Estabrooks 11 and Ann McClellan 9. Cathy Chandler led the Panthers with 26.
In the final, the New Brunswick Red Bloomers defeated the St. Mary’s Belles 68-54 as Joanne MacLean scored 26 and Ann McLellan 15. The Red Bloomers led 27-15 at the half. Diane Chaisson paced the Belles with 17. Sharon Simpson added 13.
After the season, Memorial replaces coach Glenn Taylor with Bill Redden, who’d assisted the men’s team for 12 years.
