In the quarterfinals, the 3rd-seeded Saint Mary’s Huskies edged the 6th-seeded University of Prince Edward Island Panthers 68-64. The Huskies led 15-4 early, 19-14 after one quarter and 33-31 at the half. Jace Colley nailed a trey and Chinonso Njelita a jumper as the Panthers took a 38-33 lead. But the Huskies ripped off an 11-0 run and took a 52-49 after three quarters. The Huskies extended their lead to nine but Kamari Scott nailed a bucket to give the Panthers a 64-63 lead with three minutes to play. But Jayrell Diggs drained a mid-range jumper, Shae Linton-Brown a steal and a runout, and Diggs a pair of free throws as the Huskies pulled out the win. In the other quarterfinal, the 5th-seeded Memorial Sea-Hawks clipped the 4th-seeded New Brunswick Varsity Reds 87-79. The Varsity Reds led 23-19, 49-41 (on a trio from beyond the arc by Norm Burry) and 66-62 at the quarters. But the Sea-Hawks opened the final frame with a 13-0 run to take command. Varsity Reds coach Joe Salerno said “I’m disappointed, obviously, there are a lot of disappointed guys in the locker room, but I think we deserved it. We played a pretty poor second half and this one is going to hurt because I think we had the potential to do something in this tournament and we didn’t put four quarters together. … They had a huge fourth quarter. They shot extremely well, a couple of their veteran guys really stepped up. For me, it looked like we’re still a really young team out there in the second half, poor shot selection and poor decision-making when it mattered most, and we paid heavily for that. … We are a team, and we don’t point fingers. In the final, the 2nd-seeded Dalhousie Tigers clipped the top-seeded St. Francis Xavier X-Men 77-67 in overtime. The X-Men broke to a 7-0 lead but the Tigers rallied to a 14-9 lead after one quarter. Koat Thomas caught fire as the X-Men led 33-30 at the half and Dondre Reddick began draining jumpers as they extended their lead to 52-45 after three quarters. But tournament MVP Malcolm Christie began attacking of the dribble and drawing fouls, while player of the game Sam Maillet drained a pair of treys, as Dalhousie rallied to take a 63-59 lead. The X-Men’s Deondre Reddick countered with a trey with 20 seconds to play. Christie notched a pair from the line to give the Tigers a 65-62 lead with 7.5 seconds to play. St. FX’s Bennett Grumbach misfired on a trey in a bid to knot the score but Gatluak James collected the rebound and flipped it to Matt Pennell, who fired it to Reddick, who drilled a trey to force overtime. The Tigers, though, dominated the extra session as the X-men tired and Maillet notched 6.
