After the season, Brent Baker stepped aside from the helm of the New Brunswick Varsity Reds “due to ongoing health issues. In his 13 years at the helm, he led the Reds to the 2017-18 AUS title, and was twice named the conference coach of the year (2015 and 2018). Joe Salerno, three-time National Basketball League of Canada coach of the year, was named as his replacement. The Barre, Vermont-native said “I’ve always been interested in coaching at the university level. Having the opportunity to work with players for four or five years, establishing strong relationships with them, and being able to watch their development on and off the court is something that’s always appealed to me.” Salerno was NBL coach of the year in 2013 (with the Island Storm) and in 2019 and 2020 (with the Moncton Magic). He was also head coach of the Syrian national team. UNB director of athletics John Richard said “we had a deep pool of applicants, which challenged our hiring committee, however Joe’s experience stood out from the beginning. He was very impressive and engaging throughout the process.”
