In the quarterfinals, the 4th-seeded Cape Breton Capers dusted the 5th-seeded St. Francis Xavier X-Men 89-66. The score was knotted at 17 after one quarter after Caper Paul Watson notched a putback at the buzzer. The Capers led 39-31 at the half after the teams traded late 8-0 runs in the quarter. The Capers led 66-45 after three quarters and coasted to the easy win. Paul Watson was chosen player of the game for the Capers. Osman Omar paced the Capers with 22 on 8-20 from the floor, 3-5 from the arc, 3-5 from the line, 4 boards, 4 assists and 4 steals. In the semis, the top-seeded Saint Mary’s Huskies clipped the 4th-seeded Cape Breton Capers 73-60 after leading 19-10, 39-31 and 55-45 at the quarters. The Huskies broke to a 9-0 lead and maintained a double-digit margin for most of the affair. Their largest lead was 17. The Huskies’ Andre Nitvumbura was chosen player of the game. Nico Brauner paced Saint Mary’s with 19 on 6-11 from the floor, 2-4 from the arc, 5-6 from the line, 8 boards and 4 assists. In the other semi, the 3rd-seeded Dalhousie Tigers dispatched the 2nd-seeded New Brunswick Varsity Reds 81-75. The Varsity Reds led by 14 early as Daniel Pitcher notched a pair of treys and by 26-12 after one quarter. The Tigers opened the second quarter with an 8-0 run and led 38-35 at the half. Dalhousie opened the second half with an 11-0 run, led 62-49 after three quarters, and then withstood a late Reds rally. UNB knotted the second with two minutes to play on a trey by Pitcher but Dalhousie scored their last 9 points from the line, included five by player of the game Cedric Sanogo. “We’re pretty disappointed,” said Pitcher. “The boys put in the effort, but at the end of the day it didn’t go our way. … They started pressuring us and we were just kind of rushed a bit and weren’t attacking the rim a lot, where they were attacking the rim and getting the calls, which was what we should’ve been doing.” Will Legere said “we should’ve won this game. That’s it, it’s over. They’re a tough team. You’ve got to give them credit.” Varsity Reds coach Brent Baker said “you’ve got to be up ten points on any mainland team in this building to win and we weren’t up ten, we were struggling to get back ten. … I thought we came out with a good game plan, I thought the kids executed it well, I thought they played hard.” Cedric Sanogo paced the Tigers with 17 on 6-9 from the floor, 5-6 from the line, 5 boards and 2 steals. In the final, the 3rd-seeded Dalhousie Tigers clipped the top-seeded Saint Mary’s Saints 65-55 to capture their four title in five years. The Tigers led 7-0 early and 11-10 after one quarter on a buzzer-beater by Jordan Braithwaite. They opened the second quarter with an 8-0 run but Saint Mary’s rallied to within 21-19 at the half. They extended the margin to 45-36 after three quarters but a slam by Cedric Kasongo drew the Huskies within 52-50 with 3:24 left in regulation. Alex Carson countered with three treys to ice it for the Tigers. Sascha Kappos paced Dalhousie with 20 on 6-11 from the floor, 3-4 from the arc, 5-7 from the line, 6 boards and 6 blocks. The all-tournament team featured MVP Keevan Veinot (Dalhousie); Sascha Kappos (Dalhousie); Nico Brauner (Saint Mary’s); Cedric Kasongo (Saint Mary’s); and Osman Omar (Cape Breton).
After the season, St. Francis Xavier announces that Tyrell Vernon will join the men’s and women’s programs as an associate coach for the 2019-20 and 20-21 campaigns, after which he will replace Steve Konchalski as the men’s coach. Vernon toiled for the X-Men in 2011-12 and 2012-13. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree, having previously played at McMaster University. He went on to play with the Mississauga Power of the National Basketball League of Canada (NBL) and was also the 2013 North of the Border Basketball League (NBBL) most valuable player and champion with Team 905. He served as coach of the boys basketball team at The RISE Centre (TRC Academy), a prep school in Brantford, Ont. since 2016. Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association (OSBA) finalists in 2017, Vernon then led the team to back-to-back OSBA championships in 2018 and 2019. He was also recently named the 2019 OSBA Coach of the Year.
