In the quarterfinals, the 5th-seeded Dalhousie Tigers nipped the 4th-seeded Cape Breton Capers 62-60 on a buzzer-beating jumper from Kashrell Lawrence. The Capers led 13-6, 30-26 and 45-41 at the quarters. The Tigers aggressively attacked off the dribble early and as a consequence, kept trooping to the foul line. Dalhousie’s defence, particularly that of Ritchie Kanza Mata, kept forcing Caper turnovers, leading to runout layups. Jarred Reid finally knotted the score at 60 with a mid-range jumper against an expiring shot clock with 23.6 seconds to play. Then Sven Stammberger intercepted a pass under the bucket for the Tigers, setting the stage for Lawrence’s winner. Lawrence was named player of the game for the Tigers, while Meshack Lufile earned the laurels for the Capers. Kashrell Lawrence paced the Tigers with 22 on 10-16 from the floor, 1-1 from the arc, 1-2 from the line, 8 boards and 4 steals. In the other quarterfinal, the 3rd-seeded Saint Mary’s Huskies dispatched the 6th-seeded Memorial Sea-Hawks 99-91. The score was knotted at 29 after one quarter. The Sea-Hawks led 50-48 at the half primarily on the marksmanship of Caleb Gould and Noel Moffat. The Huskies led 75-72 after three quarters. The Huskies rode the perimeter shooting of Marquis Clayton, Jeremy McAvoy to the victory. Each notched five treys. Although the Sea-Hawks led for most of the affair, the Huskies rallied to take an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter. But Davion Parnsalu and Daniel Foo nailed treys to trim the margin to three as Cape Breton rallied back. The teams kept trading treys down the stretch with Saint Mary’s marksmanship proving slightly more effective. Marquis Clayton was chosen player of the game for the Huskies, while Caleb Gould earned the laurels for the Sea-Hawks. In the semis, the 5th-seeded Dalhousie Tigers stunned the top-seeded New Brunswick Varsity Reds 85-74. Javon Masters scored the five opening points of the match as the Varsity Reds took a 17-13 lead after one quarter. Adam Karmali drained a trey for the Tigers to start the second quarter but the Varsity Reds dominated as they built a 40-29 lead at the half. The Tigers got hot in the third, with Sven Stammberger and Jarred Reid bookending the frame with treys as Dalhousie rallied to within 48-47 after three quarters. Stammberger kept firing bombs in the final frame as the Tigers slowly took command. Stammberger was chosen player of the game for the Tigers, while Masters earned the laurels for the Varsity Reds. Varsity Reds coach Brent Baker said “I’m disappointed for our guys. I’m not disappointed in our guys. That’s the big difference. A lot of those kids in that room over the past three or four years have eaten a lot of humble pie and taken a lot of beat downs, and it’s nice to walk in a locker room when you’re 16 and 4 and see the smiles on those kids faces. So I’m not going to sit here and complain. We are what we are, and they executed better than us tonight.” Sven Stammberger paced the Tigers with 20 on 7-12 from the floor, 2-4 from the arc, 4-4 from the line, 11 boards and 3 steals. In the other semi, the 3rd-seeded Saint Mary’s Huskies outlasted the 2nd-seeded Prince Edward Island Panthers 105-92 after leading 30-21, 60-48 and 77-63 at the quarters. The Huskies broke open the game midway through the first quarter as Marquis Clayton got on track. They extended their margin to as many as 16 in the third quarter before Tyler Scott and Ellis Ffrench rallied the Panthers to within three with three minutes to play in the frame. But the Huskies ripped off a 12-2 run in the final quarter to pull out the win. Osman Barrie was chosen player of the game for the Huskies, while Tyler Scott earned the laurels for the Panthers. In the final, the 5th-seeded Dalhousie Tigers clipped the 3rd-seeded St. Mary’s Huskies 88-78 in overtime. The Huskies post play overwhelmed the Tigers in the first half as St. Mary’s built a 21-12 lead after one quarter and extended the margin to 41-28 at the half. Jeremy McAvoy hit a trio from the beyond the arc as the Huskies maintained a 60-52 edge after three quarters. But the Tigers rallied down the stretch and knotted the score at 73 to force overtime and then dominated the extra session. Kashrell Lawrence was chosen player of the game for the Tigers, while Brian Rouse earned the laurels for the Huskies.
