In the quarterfinals, the 4th-seeded St. Francis Xavier X-Men nipped the 5th-seeded University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds 89-88 as Will Donkoh hit the winner with six seconds to play. The Varsity Reds led 24-17 after one quarter. The score was knotted at 34 at the half. The Varsity Reds led 68-60 after three quarters. UNB went on to open up a 13-point lead early on in the fourth quarter and led for the majority of play but the X-Men clawed their way back into the game. Down by four points with just under two minutes to play, Julius Antoine sunk a free throw and Donkoh hit a jumper, then freshman forward Kevin Bercy hit a bucket in the paint to give the X-Men an 85-84 lead. After a miscue on a Varsity Reds inbound, Jordan Clarke made a pair of free throws to give X a three-point lead with 18 seconds left on the clock, then veteran fifth year guard Daniel Quirion drained his fourth trey on the night to knot the score, setting the stage for Donkoh’s bucket. The X-Men fouled Varsity Reds forward Ryan Smith on the inbounds play. But he hit just one of two free throws as St. FX pulled out the win. Julius Antoine was chosen player of the game for the X-Men. In the other quarterfinal, the 3rd-seeded UPEI Panthers clipped the 6th-seeded Cape Breton Capers 74-60. Geoff Doane took control from the start, scoring 7 as the Panthers built a 17-13 lead after one quarter and then extended the margin to 43-25 at the half. They led 57-35 after three quarters. The Capers opened the final frame with a 13-4 run but drew no closer. Geoff Doane paced the Panthers with 18 on 7-13 from the floor, 2-2 from the arc, 2-3 from the line, 9 boards and 2 assists. In the semis, the 4th-seeded St. Francis Xavier X-Men stunned the top-seeded Acadia Axemen 93-89. The Axemen led 28-14 after one quarter and 42-37 heading into the lockers after hitting seven treys in the half. The X-men led 66-65 after three quarters. The X-Men tied the game at 63 on a Jameel Williamson jump shot followed by Williamson three-pointer to take a 66-63 lead. Three foul shots by Owen Klassen and a jumper by Anthony Sears tied the game at 66 and 68. But a jumper by Kevin Bercy gave StFX a two-point lead that would grow to a high of seven with 5:49 remaining in the game on a Will Donkoh trey. The Axemen kept the game within reach down the stretch and were losing by two points with 1:23 to play. The X-Men went 6-6 in free throws in the final minutes as a Klassen miscue on a free throw attempt opened the door for StFX to hang onto their lead and the game. Williamson was chosen player of the game. William Donkoh paced the X-Men with 31 on 13-17 from the floor, 3-4 from the arc, 2-4 from the line, 3 boards, 6 assists and 4 steals. In the other semi, the 2nd-seeded Saint Mary’s Huskies dusted the 3rd-seeded Prince Edward Island Panthers 94-78 after leading 16-15, 41-26 and 70-51 at the quarters. The Panthers struggled with the Huskies transition game from the start. UPEI got as close as 11 in the fourth quarter as Donathan Moss scored 10 in the final frame. That would be as close as Saint Mary’s would let them get as Boyd Vassell went 8-for-8 on free throws in the final minute of the game to close out the match. Harry Ezenibe was chosen player of the game for the Huskies. Boyd Vassell paced the Huskies with 19 on 4-8 from the floor, 1-3 from the arc, 10-10 from the line, 4 boards, 5 assists and 4 steals. In the final, the 2nd-seeded Saint Mary’s Huskies dispatched the 4th-seeded St. Francis Xavier X-Men 81-72 after leading 19-17, 39-37 and 64-57 at the quarters. St. FX forward Cameron Walker scored 12 in the first quarter as the X-Men hung with the Huskies early but St. Mary’s depth and balance allowed them to slowly pull away. Although the X-Men briefly took the lead in the third quarter, Jeremy bookended a Huskies run with treys as Saint Mary’s took command. Jordan Clarke, Kevin Bercy and Will Donkoh took it hard to the paint in the final minutes, forcing their way to the free throw line, trying to keep St. FX’s title hopes alive. But Saint Mary’s put it away in the last two minutes with big defensive stops leading to fast break opportunities for Marquis Clayton and a Theon Reefer slam dunk, giving the Huskies a 12-point advantage with just 1:44 remaining. Saint Mary’s Theon Reefer was named player of the game. Harry Ezenibe paced the Huskies with 14 on 7-13 from the floor, 0-3 from the line and 10 boards.
