In the semis, 4th-seeded Saint Mary’s stunned regular season champ and top-seeded Acadia 72-69 as David Smith scored 12 and Dave McIntosh 11. The Axemen led 36-33 at the half. The Huskies led by 8 in the second half but Acadia ripped off an 8-0 run to knot the score at 62. David Smith drained a trey to give the Huskies the lead. Acadia again knotted the score but Dave McIntosh notched an and-one and then hit 1-2 from the line to ice it. Kevin Veinot led the Axemen with 20. Peter Morris added 18. The Axemen (coached by Dave Nutbrown) also included Rodney Martin, Grant McDonald, Jason Wilson, Rob Hahn, Clive Anderson, Ted Byrne, Marty Frenette, Bryan Loates, Tyrone Carvery, Danny Steele, Charles Ikejiani and Chris Adams.
In the other semi, St. FX defeated UPEI 71-69 as Andy Ledoux scored 19 and Kyle Gayle 14. Mike Morgan led the Panthers with 25. The Panthers (coached by George Morrison) also included Peter Gordon, Delroy Adams, Ron Deighan, David Dunn, Jeff Allen, Steve Ruiz, Mark Roberts, Alonzo Wright, Mark McKellar, Duncan Shaw, Brett Wood and Tom McSwiggan.
In the final, Saint Mary’s defeated St. FX 66-65 as Mike Williams scored 20 on 8-8 from the floor, 4-4 from the line and 9 boards. John Murphy added 10, David Smith 8, Dave McIntosh 7, Tony Walker 6, Chris Rowarth 5 and Gary Bratty 4. Andy Ledoux led St. FX with 10. Saint Mary’s hit 27-59 (.460) from the floor and 10-14 (.710) from the line. St. FX rallied from a 12-point deficit to knot the scored at 62. The Huskies answered with a pair of buckets, including one by Williams but X-Man Chris Ross answered with a trey. St. FX had the ball with 18 seconds to play but Andy Ledoux’ 15-foot jumper rimmed out. McIntosh told the Saint Mary’s Journal that “the fans gave us a big boost during the timeout (with 18 seconds to play). We all thought ‘we can’t lose, we can’t lose’ and all you could hear in the background was S-M-U. S-M-U. It really fired me up and it know it fired the other guys up too.” Saint Mary’s outrebounded St. FX 33-23, including a 13-6 margin on the offensive glass. Saint Mary’s had 7 turnovers and St. FX 9. Chris Ross paced the X-Men with 17. Kyle Gayle added 12 and Andy Ledoux 10.
After the season, Doc Ryan resigned after eight years at the helm of Dalhousie to pursue studies in the health sciences.
