In the semis, Acadia defeated St. FX 69-67.
In the other semi, the UPEI Panthers edged the Mount Allison Mounties 79-75 as Delroy Adams and Aion Pettigrew blistered the nets in the second half. Mount Allison led 51-43 with five minutes to play but the Panthers ripped off a 14-2 run. Randy Field led the Mounties with 19. Pat Baker added 17, while nabbing 10 boards, John Johnson 12 and Rick MacKay 12. Mounties coach Dave Crook told Canadian Press that “we had it in our hands for well over half the game” but were dominated on the boards.
In the final, Acadia upset UPEI 77-71. UPEI had been ranked number one in the nation for most of the year. The Panthers opened the affair by trying a box-and-one defence alternately on Gary Towle and Chris Sumner but it opened up the floor for other Axemen, particularly Peter Norris and Rodney Martin. The Axemen led 22-13 after one quarter and 40-33 at the half. The Panthers shifted to man-to-man defence in the second half and rallied within five but Acadia iced it at the line. Tournament MVP Rodney Martin paced the Axemen with 28. Peter Morris added 18 and Chris Sumner 14. Trevor Willock led the Panthers with 19. Aion Pettigrew added 14 and Tyrone Norman 14.
On July 27-85 Allan Waye is named to replace Gary Heald at the helm of the Saint Mary’s Huskies.
