In the semis, the St. Francis Xavier X-Men dumped the New Brunswick Varsity Reds 79-76 as Adrien scored 32, McIver 18, Gurunlian 17 and McCabe 11. Scott Devine led the Varsity Reds with 17. Ted Kicinski added 13, Bob Aucoin 13 and Chris McCabe 11. The Varsity Reds also competed in the Northwest Conference. The Varsity Reds (coached by Don Nelson, assisted by Phil Wright) also included Luigi Florean, Roberto Florean, Don MacNeil, Don McCormack, Mark McGeachy, Steve McGinley, Mike McLaughlin, Wayne Veysey and Rod Wilson.
In the other semi, Saint Mary’s edged Acadia 86-85 as Lee Davis scored 30, Ron Blommers 15, Ross Quackenbush 15, Rick Plato 14 and John Dronsella 10. Acadia led 47-40 at the half and 80-72 down the stretch but the Huskies ripped off a 10-0 run led by Leroy Davis and Rick Plato, along with two inside buckets by Ross Quackenbush. Plato hit two free throws to give Saint Mary’s an 86-83 lead before Shawne Ricks responded with two meaningless free throws. Leroy Davis told the Saint Mary’s Journal that “I was some scared when I shot for I knew the season would be over if I missed.” Mike Hazzard led the Huskies with 36. Donny Ehler added 15, Bo Hampton 14 and Ted Upshaw 11. The Axemen (coached by Dick Hunt) also included John Archibald, Phil Coldwell, Ken Fells, John Grimmer, Steve Johnson, Alfie MacLeod, Dave Montgomery, Allan Oliver, Dan Sukara and Robert Upshaw.
In the final, Saint Mary’s defeated St. FX 94-77 as Rick Plato scored 22, Leroy Davis 21, Ron Blommers 20 and John Dronsella 15. Varouj Gurunlian led the X-Men with 20. Tom Sullivan added 17, Pat Adrien 12 and Gil Green 8. The Huskies led 12-4 early and by as many as 26. The X-Men rallied no closer than 12. Huskies coach Gary Heald was in his rookie year at the helm.
After the season, Mount Allison coach Garney Henley announced that he was resigning because of lack of “co-operation” from the school’s administration.
