In the semis, Saint Mary’s defeated Acadia 100-69?. The Axemen (coached by Dick Hunt, assisted by James Duff) included Mike Hazzard, Donnie Ehler, Bo Hampton, Robert Upshaw, Ted Upshaw, Tom Lyons, Tony Aker, Steve Johnson, Don Oliver, Ken Fells, Bruce Hunt, Alfie MacLeod, Ray Mapp, Eric Skinner, Peter Carpentieri, John Archibald and Tom Cavanaugh.
In the other semi, St FX d’d UPEI 86-65. The Panthers were led by Larry McGhee, who along with centre John Guilford and forward Kenneth Salter joined the Panthers after four years at East Texas State, where they led them to fourth place in the NAIA tourney and was named an NAIA All-American. PEI’s coach as Kevin Feighery, a native of the Bronx, in his fifth year.
In the final, the Saint Mary’s Huskies defeated St. FX 84-71. The X-Men led 36-33 at the half. According to Halifax Chronicle-Herald, “St.F.X. made Saint Mary’s play their game in the first half but they couldn’t sustain the tempo, couldn’t make up points easily and the Huskies hit them like a battering ram in the second half, building up a 15-point cushion in the first 10 minutes and coasting to an 81-71 victory.” Simply put, the Huskies wore down the X-Men. Kevin Wood, who scored 19, said “it was a great win but to be honest, we didn’t play that well. But that’s the sign of a great team. … Not to play well and still win.” Percy Davis paced the Huskies with 22. Mickey Fox added 18. Greg Winston led the X-Men with 30.
After the season, rookie UPEI coach and AUAA coach of the year Kevin Feighrey resigned, telling the student paper, The PEI Sun, that the primary reason is “the grey area that is the future of basketball at UPEI,” specifically problems with a group of boosters, alumni and ex-players “who control the basketball associations on the Island, and then turn them into sewing-circle cliques. … As especially concerning university basketball, all this group did is criticize our recruits, give negative defeatist feelings to our players, and also supported the atrocious officiating we got from the Island crew.”
Al Yarr retired at Dalhousie after 15 years at the helm.
In Northeast Conference play, UNB finished second in the league. Bob Aucoin was chosen first-team all-conference.
