Acadia rolled through the regular season with an 11-1 record. But St. Francis Xavier, which finished second at 10-2 was entitled to challenge the Axemen for the crown by virtue of its win against Acadia earlier in the season.

In the challenge match, Acadia dumped St. FX 69-63 after taking a 33-31 halftime lead. Steve Konchalski scored 23, Andy Kranack 16, Dave Rode 15, Brian Heaney 12, Peter Pike 2 and Ward White 1 as the Axemen won the Read Trophy. The Axemen started five Americans: 6-6 Dave Rode of Pennsylvania; 6-5 Andy Kranack of Pennsylvania; 6-2 Steve Konchalski of Elmhurst, N.Y.; 6-2 freshman Brian Heaney of Rockaway Beach, N.Y.; and 5-8 Peter Pike of Nashua, New Hampshire. The eight-man squad also included 6-4 sophomore Scott Lumsden of Saugus, Massachusetts and two Canadians, 6-6 freshman Ward White of Fredericton, N.B., and sophomore Jim Clark of St. Thomas, Ontario. St. FX was led by Bill Buchawecki 22; Dave Barry 18; Paul Chenard 12, Neil Bisson 6; Kevin Kelly 3 and John Gorham 2.
