The MIAA becomes one league and eliminates their separation between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick/PEI divisions running separate competitions, with the champions facing off for the Maritime title.
In the regular season, Acadia finished the season with an 11-1 record, and St. FX finished second at 10-2. By MIAA regulations, that entitles St. FX to make a sudden-death challenge for the title if they’ve split regular season title. St. FX had defeated Acadia 61-60 in one of their earlier meetings. Saint Mary’s Bob Lahey, the conference’s leading scoring on the conference’s highest scoring team, was selected the CIAU player of the year by the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic News, published out of Ryerson. Acadia held rivals to 57 points per game.

In the playoff game, Acadia won its third Read Cup in four years with a 78-54 pasting of St. FX. Although only ahead 35-31 at the half, Acadia’s tough defence held St. FX to a scant six field goals in the second half. Acadia also blistered the nets with a .704 percentage for the floor hitting 31-44. Ritchie Spears scored Acadia’s first 10 points en route to a 29-point night, while Andy Kranack added 23 and scrappy John Olinto, who harassed the St. FX guards into turnovers and steals, added 8. Dave Rode scored 6, Steve Konchalski 6 and Damon Pouyat 6. St. FX was led by Dave Barry 19, Paul Chenard 10, Neil Bisson 8 and Bill Buchawiecki 8.
