Calgary’s Leighann Doan captured her second consecutive Nan Copp. The fifth-year senior from Halkirk, who toiled at Stettler William Hay High, averaged 21.5 ppg to lead the country in scoring for the second straight season and became the Dinosaurs all-time leading scorer with 1,958 career points. A starter for all five years as a Dinosaur, Doan scored 30 or more points on five occasions in 20 conference games. She also registered 55 steals, averaged 8.6 rpg and scored 20 or more on 16 games, while hitting .575 from the field and .778 from the line. Doan was the CIAU rookie of the year in 1997 and earned her fourth consecutive first-team All-Canadian honours. “My statistics weren’t as good as last season, so this really is more how the team performed overall,” said Doan, who led Canada West in scoring for the fourth consecutive year.
Marquis wins here second straight coach of the year honor after steering Laval to 28-4 regular season record and 19-1 in Quebec, including an 18-game winning streak. Top seed in national tourney. Marquis was an assistance coach for the national team at the Summer Olympics in Sydney.
Josee Lalonde of Laval was selected rookie of the year. The 6-0 centre helped lead Laval to top seed in national tourney. The Chateauguay native averaged 15.9 ppg, 10.7 rpg and .648 from the floor. A Quebec all-star.
Laval’s Josee Lalonde was named the Shields winner.
The first ever Defensive Player of the Year award went to Manitoba’s Marjorie Kelly. The inaugural winner was a fifth-year guard for the Bisons and GPAC all-star. She had 9 blocks and 44 steals on the season to go along with her 14.2 ppg.
Joining Doan as 1st team All-Canadians were: Isabelle Grenier (Laval); Anne Smith (Manitoba); Erin Soroko (Winnipeg); and Teresa Kleindienst (Simon Fraser).
The 2nd team All-Canadians were: Julie Galipeau (St. Mary’s); Pat Marcello (Guelph); Lindsay Brooke (Victoria); Shauna Conway (Laurentian); and Corrin Wersta (Regina).
