Regina Corrin Wersta was named recipient of the Nan Copp. The GPAC MVP led the Cougars in scoring. The five-foot-10 forward from Regina won the award after receiving the most all-Canadian votes in balloting by the CIAU Women’s Basketball Coaching Association. Wersta, the GPAC Player of the Year, led the Cougars in scoring and ranked in the top five in the country. She shot 58.7 per cent from the field.
Victoria’s Kathy Shields was named the Ennis winner for the third time in her career. She led the Vikes to the Canada West title. Shields has coached Victoria since 1978 and has won seven national championships along the way. A former member of the Canadian national team, Shields formerly played university ball for Laurentian.
McMaster’s Danielle Everitt received the Shields award. The 5-8 guard from Guelph was the OUA West rookie of the year and a first-team conference all-star.
Joining Wersta as 1st-team All-Canadians were: Stephanie Harrison (Laurentian); Anne Smith (Manitoba); Jessica Mills (U.B.C.); and Leighann Doan (Calgary).
The 2nd-team All-Canadians were: Angela Hrkac (Lakehead); Jennifer Johnston (UPEI); Erin Soroko (Winnipeg); Carol-Anne Tull (Concordia); and Jackie Simon (Alberta)
Joining Everitt on the all-rookie unit were: Lindsay Anderson (Victoria); Heidi Schwartz (Winnipeg); Isabelle Grenier (Laval); and Mandi May Bond (Ryerson)
