Season summary
It was perhaps best described as a season of angst for the Raptors and their fans. Some of that was a product of injuries; a mediocre offensive efficiency (26th) in the league; a particularly dreadful stretch in which they lost 15 of 16 games; questionable leadership by their franchise player Scottie Barnes; and often-mystifying game strategies and substitution patterns by coach Darko Rajakovic. The Raptors improved defensively but failed to win a road game against a team with a record of .500 or better, leaving fans wondering whether they were tanking down the stretch in a bid to garner a better lottery slot in the draft, particularly as they were widely viewed as having an easy closing schedule. The Raptors struggled all season to score in the halfcourt and the notion that they could eventually build a contender around Scottie Barnes and point guard Immanuel Quickley was viewed as essentially farfetched. Rajakovic asserted that “I think there’s a progression to everything. In order to be good off the dribble or an off-the-move shooter from the 3-point line, the first step is becoming a really good spot-up shooter. We’ve seen it from RJ (Barrett). At the start of the year … he was trying to take a lot of 3s, and then when he settled for more catch-and-shoot 3s, his percentage improved quite a bit. I think we need to have that approach with Scottie while, at the same time, he needs to work on other shots that are going to be a part of his package.”
