SEASON WRAP
An altogether disappointing season for the Raptors, which culminated in the firing of tactical defensive wizard and 2019-20 NBA coach of the year Nick Nurse. After finishing ninth in the East division standings, the Raptors squandered a 19-point, third-quarter lead as hosts and fell to 109-105 to Chicago in the NBA’s play-in round. Although their post defence and boardwork was significantly improved after acquiring Jacob Poeltl late in the season, their inability to hit the trey and their lack of depth at all positions was constantly evident all season, particularly at the point guard spot. While they were plagued by injuries all season, several Raptors often appeared lethargic or indifferent, with only O.G. Anunoby and late addition Jacob Poeltl consistently exerting effort on the defensive end of the floor. As per NBA custom, the Raptors senior management (president Masai Ujiri and general manager Bobby Webster) laid the blame and lowered the boom on Nurse, with widespread leaks to the media hinting at player discontent. All told, a dreary campaign.
