The USCAA was founded in 1966 as the National Little College Athletic Association, primarily to sponsor a national basketball tournament for small colleges and junior colleges. It began adding more sports in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1989, it changed its name to the National Small College Athletic Association. It adopted its current name in 2001.
