In national Pool B round robin play: …………………………………………………… The Manitoba Frontier Express defeated the Regina Springers 80-69 as Angie Straub pitched in 19 and Cheryl Susinski 18.

Both semis saw the second-place round robin finishers knock off the first-place finishers. Manitoba’s Frontier Toyota Express did a defensive number on Edmonton’s Trix Kannekens as they stunned Gainers Superior 62-58. Angie Straub pitched in 29 points. Edmonton was ahead 33-24 at the half after blistering the nets at a .720 pace. But in the second half, Manitoba was on fire. Alberta coach Doug Baker noted that “they shot unbelievably in the second half. Straub hit everything. I don’t think she missed a shot. We were right there most of the time. They just made all of the tough shots.” Jane Pirnie added 14 for Manitoba. Kannekens led Alberta with 23. Manitoba coach Bruce Pirnie noted that “with Kannekens, you have to play the body. And Angie’s the one to do it because when she was on the national team, she was always playing against players bigger than herself. Angie did a good job on Trix.”

In the other semi, Vancouver Kirby’s Clippers knocked off Halifax Red Fox 56-52.

In the final, Carol Turney Loos scored 39 to lead the Vancouver Kirby’s Clippers past the Manitoba Frontier Express 70-66. Manitoba, which was ahead 32-31 at the half, was paced by Gail Winston’s 21 points. Angie Straub fouled out with 14:34 to play, having scored 17 points. Coach Bruce Pirnie said “I think we could’ve shot Turney-Loos with a gun and she still would’ve scored. I hadn’t thought she’d really done much in the tournament to this point. I guess she was just saving it for when they most needed it.”
