        In the semis, Patti Sheppard scored 11 and played a brilliant defensive game to spark New Brunswick past the Calgary Atco Angels 71-60.

        In the other semi, the Winnipeg Gemini Express rallied from a nine-point half-time deficit to tie it at 55 with just over two minutes to go. But Vancouver Kirby’s pulled out a 59-55 victory down the stretch, as Angie Dobie and Joanne Sargeant each scored 22. Kathy Straub led Winnipeg with 16, Kathy Dubesky 14, Gail Winston 10, Nancy Felbel 8 and Jane Edstrom 7.

        In the 7th place playoff, Saskatoon Women’s World whipped the Newfoundland All-Stars 85-46. Saskatoon (coached by Pat Jackson, managed by Judy Knoll) included Barb Wilson, Heather Witzel, Lorraine Wright, Alison Lang, Joyce Didur, Donna Veale, Linda Bent, Barb Wright, Nancy Brentnell and Theresa Surbey. The Newfoundland All-Stars (coached by Leo Buckel) included Mary Taylor, Marg Keough, Karen MacDonald, Sandy Fleuriau, Agnes Delaney, Donna Brenton, Patti Bolych, Lorraine Power, Sharon Ash, Ellen Martin and alternate Jane Marie Flynn.

        In the 5th place playoff, the Ottawa Rookies dumped the Halifax Midtown Magicians 71-63 as Donna Hobin scored 13 and Chris Hogan 11. The Rookies (coached by John Scobie and managed by Hazel Miner) also included Debbie Power, Sue Butler, Bonnie McNaughton, Sandy Gurnett, Hogan, Karen Spalding, Cathy Mulvihill, Sandy Clubb, Theresa Grant, Ingrid Kihl and Debbie Claringbold. The Magicians (coached by Steve Bezanson, managed by Donna Gray) included Heather Shute, Helen Jensen, Sharon Keough, Joan Selig, Helen Castonguay, Julie West, Kim Robson, Deanne Campbell, Karin Maessen and Diane Thompson.

        In the bronze medal match, Jane Edstrom scored 20 and Gail Winston 17 to lead the Winnipeg Gemini Express to a 74-71 victory over the Calgary Atco Angels, who were paced by Holly Jackson-Pederson’s 33 points. Winnipeg was ahead 41-28 at the half but Calgary rallied to within two late in the game. “I told the girls not to get complacent,” said Express coach Barry King. “I warned them at halftime that 13 points were nothing if they started to hit. I reminded them that we have won a lot of games coming from behind.” The Angels (coached by Randy Harrison) also included donna Gregg, Sandy Devcich, Nancy Knowlton, Linda Hirch, Wendy Calvert, Colleen Thomson, Sandy McGregor, Nancy Ferguson, Joy Hunter, Barb Stewart and Vicki Hansen.

        In the final, the New Brunswick Schooners defeated Vancouver Kirby’s 65-55. The Schooners took a 39-32 lead at the half over the Vancouver Kirby’s. But Vancouver rallied from 14 down in the first half and Angie Dobie tied it at 48 with six minutes to go. The Schooners held on to a 56-53 lead with a minute when they exploded with a 9-2 run to take the title. Kim Hansen led New Brunswick with 19. Cathy Maxwell added 15 and Claire Mitton 13. Vancouver was led by Angie Dobies’ 13 points. “We’re normally not an offensive minded team. But B.C. has a tough defence and we had to adapt to play them,” said coach Joyce Slipp. “The girls should have all the credit for being able to make the change because it took an all-out team effort to win.” Dobie noted that the Schooners “deserved to win. They outplayed us all the way.”

        Maxwell finished as the tourney’s high scorer, hitting 102 points in five games. Manitoba’s Angie Straub scored 99 in five games while Calgary’s Jackson-Pedeson scored 94 in five games.
