       In the bronze medal match, Diane Stober scored 19, Theresa Phaneuf 15 and Debbie Smith 13 for the U of Regina Cougettes as they defeated the Winnipeg St. Vital Grads 63-58. Winnipeg was led by Leslie Divers’ 22 points. Barb Hall added 16. The Grads (coached by Jerry Ilchyna, managed by Gerry Ilchyna) also included Arpena Babian, Donna Bradley, Elaine Zushman, Alice Dunford, Virginia Brown, Darlene Bonney, Pati-Ann Marchyshyn, Carol Ruff, Bonnie Gabbs, Julie Osachuk and Chris Crawford.

       In the final, the Victoria Home Lumbers defeated the Hamilton Bobcats 40-38 as Lorraine Tutte came off the bench with 7 seconds to play (replacing leading scorer Wendy Grant, who’d fouled out) to score the winning basket with one second remaining on the clock. Lumbers coach Paul Lusk told the Hamilton Spectator that “Lorraine is one girl you have to feel sorry for. We picked up players and she was the one who was forced to sit on the bench. Then she comes out and scores the big basket.” Hamilton was ahead 23-20 at the half and up seven in the second half when Victoria rallied for a 36-30 lead with four minutes to go. Hamilton tied the score at 38 with seven seconds to go on a bucket by Sue Lindley. Victoria’s Wendy Grant fouled out on the play, setting the stage for Tutte’s winner. Grant finished with 14, tourney MVP Angie Dobie 8, Mary Coutts 8, Sue Hoefer 3, Gail Klaver 2 and Dee Freethy 2, while Karen Bigelow, Marilyn Benn and Sherry Stevenson were scoreless and Dianna Morris (who’d torn a ligament in the semis) did not play. Hamilton received 16 points from Sue Lindley, including eight in the final six minutes. Candy Clarkson added 8. Lindley said “it was a tough one to lose. But I actually didn’t think we would come that close to them.” Bobcats coach Earl Begg said “we ran out of miracles.” Victoria hit 14-51 from the floor, while Hamilton was 17-52. The Home Lumbers were 12-18 from the line, while Bobcats were 4-6. The Home Lumbers added Sue Hoefer, Gail Klaver and Sherry Stevenson to their roster before the tournament. CABA rules allowed teams to supplement their rosters with other players who toiled for squads within their association.
