London’s Fran Wigston hit two free throws after time expired to force overtime. Windsor led 30-25 at the half and by 11 with five minutes to play. But Bev Clenighan, Gaile Davenport and Cherrie Martin all fouled out. Clenighan was at the line for a one-and-one with four seconds to play. She missed the first and in the mad scramble for the ball, fouled Wigston, who two free throws to ice the win. Barbara Wilkinson led the Grads with 16. Peckham added 14, Fran Wigston 10, Shaule 9, McCrae 8, Innis 2 and McCracken 1. Pat Harrison scored 21 to lead Windsor Club 240 (coached by Bill Thomson). The U.B.C. Thunderettes, who had just won the CIAU title and entered the tourney with a 15-1 record, having lost only to UVic during the season, opened with a 76-28 thrashing of the London Grads. After taking a 22-point lead at the half, UBC rolled through the second as centre Jan Gee scored 16, Debbie Phelan 13, Terri McGovern 10 and Heather Cranston 10. London was led by Fran Wigston 13.

        In UVic’s defeat 41-39 win over U.B.C., Vikettes coach Mike Gallo told the Victoria Times-Colonist: “We had the ball about 70% of the time. … We called a time out with 38 seconds left to give the girls a breather. But we lost the ball and regained it without any damage done. We called our last time out with five seconds left and I told the girls to keep the hall moving, dont let them foul us. They did just that. UBC never got near our players at the end.” Thunderbirds coach Norm Vickery told Canadian Press that Victoria’s “poise” was the difference. “We won it from the field. They won it from the line.” U.B.C. starting guards Joanne Sargeant and Wendy Grant fouled out in the last minute. Terri McGovern was already on the bench with a knee injury, having torn a cartilage with 10 minutes to play. Victoria had led 23-19 at the half and seemed unfazed by U.B.C. man-to-man defence. The score was tied six times in the final half and Victoria was ahead 41-39 with two minutes go to. U.B.C. missed three free throws and twice turned the ball over the final two minutes as Victoria held on. Gail Carson led the Vikettes with 11. Yvonne Letellier added 10, Rose Jossul 10, Dierdre Ogden 9 and Lorna McHattie 1, while Mary Clarkson, Laury Atkinson, Judy Pearson, Eva Van Wouw and Pam Henson were scoreless. Terri McGovern paced U.B.C. with 12. Wendy Grant added 11, Debbie Phelan 8, Bev Barnes 3, Bev Bland 2, Joanne Sargent 2 and Janice Gee 1, while Heather Cranston, Linda McCulloch and Peggy Robinson were scoreless. Four Vikings fouled out, Myrna McHattie, Letellier, Laury Atkinson and Carlson. The U.B.C. loss was only the team’s second of the season.

Jean Fabie paced the Alpines with 21. Marlene Baughan added 6, Pauline McHugh 4, Helen Narmi 4, Ellen McDonald 4 and Jean Hutcheon 2, while Rose Donovan, Marilyn Doherty, Marg McCarrity and Crystal Jones were scoreless.

        The University of Victoria Vikettes smacked the Edmonton KGs 55-30 as Rose Jossul scored 10, Yvonne Letellier 8, Lorna McHattie 6, Laury Atkinson 6, Mary Clarkson 5, Gail Carlson 4, Judy Pearson 4, Diedre Ogden 4, Pam Henson 4 and Eva Van Wouw 2. Gail Bamford led Edmonton with 9.
