        At the national tourney, Winnipeg St. Vital’s Grads defeated Windsor N&D 64-45. The Grads took a 34-15 lead and romped. JoAnn Koske paced Winnipeg with 22. Leslie Hamerton added 16, Marj Bailey 9, Janice Riel 8, Thiberge 4, Alix 2, Bzdntny 2 and Wood 1. Pat Harrison led Windsor with 9. Mary Kern added 9, Hickson 8, Martin 7, Boretsky 6, Cheney 2, Chase 2 and Conkle 2. AKO coach Bill Thomsen told the Windsor Star “we just couldn’t get it going.”

        U.B.C. whipped Alberta 80-38 after leading 44-19 at the half. Linda Willard paced the Thunderettes with 14. Cathy Galuska led the Jasperettes with 14.

        Windsor N&D defeated the UNB Alpines 71-53 after shooting 33-35 from the line, including 18-18 in the first half. Pat Harrison led Windsor with 17. Rose Boretsky added 16, Mary Kern 14, Martin 11, Hickson 6, Conkle 5 and Chaney 2. Marlene Vaughan paced the Alpines with 25. Greenwood added 12, McHugh 4, Olive 3, Thorn 3, Bastrache 2, McGrity 2 and Ducette 2. The Alpines hit 15-30 from the line.

        In U.B.C.’s 67-35 defeat of Windsor, Terry McGovern scored 17, Linda Willard 17, Wendy Grant 12, Carol Shollert 8, Brenda McFarlane 7, Eija Peitso 2, Kathy Williams 2 and Joanne Sargeant 2. Pat Harrison led Windsor with 13. Cherrie Martin added 8, Rose Boretsky 7, Cheney 4 and Mary Kern 3.

        Manitoba thrashed Windsor 64-45 as Ann Koskie scored 22, Lesley Hamerton 16, Marj Bailey 9 and Janice Riel 8.

        In Windsor’s 45-40 victory over the Edmonton Jasperettes, Pat Harrison scored 13, Mary Kern 13, Rose Boretsky 9, Conkle 5, Chase 2, Cheney 2 and Hickson 1, while Cherrie Martin was scoreless. Irene Sanders led Edmonton with 13. Smittie added 8, Galusha 6, Williams 6, Richards 4, Kirk 2 and Johnston 1.

        In the deciding match between the undefeateds, U.B.C. thrashed Winnipeg St. Vital Grads 83-54 using a zone press and tight defence. Betty Ross led the Thunderettes with 21. Terry McGovern added 13. The Grads were paced by JoAnn Koske 18 and Lesley Hamerton 15. Winnipeg coach Al Crockett said a five-minute scoring drought and “superior conditioning” was the difference. “They practice two hours a day and we practice two hours a week. Our club is made up of working girls.” As was U.B.C.’s offensive rebounding. U.B.C. led 38-31 at the half. UBC coach Ken Shields, then a graduate assistant doing his Master’s in physical education, noted the T-Bird men “have nothing on us. We had to win here otherwise the Birds would never let the girls forget it. … We played the best basketball we’ve played all year. We shot over 50 percent from the floor.” UBC played in the Western Canadian Intercollegiate Association and in the Vancouver women’s Senior ‘A’ league, which spawned several national champs. By January, UBC was 9-1 in Western University play and had finished in first place in the Senior ‘A’ league with an 11-4 record. Coaches Shields and Vickery praised their players – “There are some kids on this team with tremendous ability and potential… They really worked hard and have performed very well.” Three Thunderettes, Terri McGovern, Joanne Sargent and Betty Ross, were also members of Canada’s National basketball team. The Thunderettes finished (32-6) on the season. According to Wendy Grant, the secret of success was the training techniques of coaches Shields and Vickery; “They were sheer hell.” Coach Shields, when asked to sum up the season stated, “The girls worked real hard and Norm (Vickery) and myself just had a great time.”
