Elliotts coach Alex Kvasnack told Canadian Press the national losses were an indication that Eastern women’s basketball had to be overhauled, specifically by introducing five-man rules at the high school level. The argument that girls aren’t strong enough to play five-man, instead of “antiquated” six-man, basketball (in which guards cannot cross the centre line and are not allowed to score) is disproven by international and Western basketball, he argued. “Quebec is down to one girls’ team and when they toured Greece and Italy last year, they were so badly beaten, they didn’t bother to send the scores home. Unless we take steps to get up-to-date, girls’ basketball is doomed in all of Eastern Canada.”
