Following the game, Spencers coach Gordy Andrews told The Province that “I’m through with basketball. We were 20 points better than Gainers and were forced to lose by two points on account of poor refereeing. If that’s what we have to buck, I’m through.” The game was officiated by two Victoria referees. Andrews objected to the use of Bill Levy after he had proved to be a homer in game one. But BCBA v.p. Gordon Wooldridge told him “we couldn’t claim Levy as inefficient. When I asked him why, he said he had been talking to the fans. Apparently, he didn’t see the first game.” Vancouver requested a replay of the game. Cagette Basketball League Joe Polley threatened to fold the league if the BCBA didn’t order a replay. Andrews said he’d bet $100 with anyone that his Spencers would win if neutral refs were used. Bill Levy and Wally Stipe refereed the gam in defiance of a pre-game order from the BCBA that Bob McMurchie be used instead of Levy. BC municipal councillor Mert Gordon was asked to investigate. He reported that “matters are so complicated by misunderstanding with regard to appointment of referees that it is impossible to accurately place blame without fuller investigation. Gordon Andrews conduct from the bench cost Spencers the first game on technical fouls. Spencers definitely selected and paid Buck Kennett and Gainers felt under this arrangement that they were also entitled to their choice of Bill Levy in the second game.” Victoria manager Jimmy Hall said the appeal was denied because Andrews “worked the girls into such a nervous lather from the bench that they weren’t able to play their regular game.”
