The 6-4 forward scored 18 in the first half and 14 in the second, shooting .860 from the floor. Coach of the Dalhousie U. Tigers, a member of the 1980 Olympic team, Ryan easily and repeatedly penetrated the lane, while also pounding in his outside jumpers and controlling the tempo of the game. Mike Hazard added 18, Mickey Fox 17 and Ross Quackenbush 17. Halifax was up 49-34 at the half. Winnipeg was led by Darryl Rumsey 26, Terry Burns 18 and Brian Twomey 17. Ryan said “we did what we had to do. …I surprised myself. Our quickness and speed paid off and we have some guys that can get upstairs.” Halifax coach Bill Thow was “glad Doc was on our side. There were many times he turned the game around for us.” The Raiders got off to a slow start, as their three-man press did little against the Winnipeg backcourt. Then they shifted to a 1-3-1 defence that befuddled Winnipeg, often forcing them deep into the shot clock when they had to throw up bad shots. Ryan and guard John Gallinaugh ran give-and-gos all game and attacked with the penetration dribble, while Halifax’ defence contained Winnipeg to six points over the final eight minutes of the half. Rumsey played the second half with four fouls and an injured ankle but scored 18 to keep Winnipeg in the game.
