But both teams advanced to the national playoffs because it was held in the West. The draw outraged the Saskatoon Commodores. General manager Spero Leakos told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “we were more than a little disturbed by the draw. It gave Lethbridge an automatic bye into the championships. We felt we had a better team than Lethbridge but we were never given the opportunity to prove it.” With the withdrawal of Quebec from the national tournament, two teams from the Prairie region were to obtain berths at nationals. “If only one of the three teams were going to BC, then losing twice to the Madisons would have been alright,” said Leakos. “But once they decided to send two teams, we should have played Lethbridge to determine who was actually second best.” But Lethbridge received a bye into the final (a CABA decision). “Winnipeg just toyed with Lethbridge on Sunday. But against us, they had to work hard in both games to beat us by 10 points. We were losing to the second-best men’s team in Canada. It simply wasn’t fair for one-team to knock us out of a three-team tournament.” …………………………………………………… In the Madisons 96-86 win over the Commodores, they led 23-17 after one quarter and 45-42 at the half.
