In a foul filled affair, Hamilton shot 24-58 free throws. Saskatchewan was led by Betty Ann Frederickson’s 12. Barbara Hodges added 10, Jennifer Leddy 10, Janet Lamers 9, Joy Spence 7, Sharon Kinch 4 and Darlene Potts 3, while Gail Scott, Mary McLintock, Lorraine Darbellay and Terri McDonald were scoreless.
In the bronze medal match, the Moncton Purple Knightettes pounded the Saskatchewan Aces 67-49 after leading 35-15 at the half. Nancy Buzzell paced the Purple Knightettes with 20. Barb Clowater added 15, Sandra Humes 12, Joyce Douthwright 10, Dawn Allen 6 and Brenda Wallace 4, while Susan Wallace, Dot McDonald, Cindy Ford and Joanne Logan were scoreless. Jennifer Leddy scored 10 to pace the Aces (coached by Bob Stayner and managed by Vic Ouellette). Betty-Ann Fredericksen added 8, Joy Spence 8, Barbara Hodges 7, Janet Lamers 5, Sharon Kinch 4, Gail Scott 4 and Terri McDonald 3, while Darlene Potts, Mary McClintock and Lorraine Darbeallay were scoreless.
In the final, the Hamilton Dumonts whipped the U of Victoria Vikettes 63-35. Hamilton led 11-3 early and 30-21 at the half. Victoria tried to press but the Dumont guards easily handled the pressure. The Dumonts superior size and aggression were also instrumental in the win. The Dumonts shot 15-25 from line, while Victoria was 7-14. Christine Brass scored 25 points, including 12 in second half, Wendy Connor 14, Pat Macdonald 9 before fouling out early in the second half. Heather Gilmour added 6, Lindy Thomas 5 and Sharon Leitch 4, while Carol Quinn and Judy Wozney were scoreless. For Victoria, Marcia McIntyre scored 11, Lynn Hagglund 7, Jean Robertson 6, Marg Maysmith 5, Marg Woodley 4, Margo Jackson 2 and Gisela Weger 1, while Gail Vaughan, Dina Gibson and Vicki Williams were scoreless. “I didn’t get to play much of it but this the greatest,” said MacDonald, who fouled out 58 seconds into the second half with Hamilton leading 34-21. “I thought we were really in trouble at that point,” Begg said. But Hamilton pulled it together. “When Patti’s in there, they seem satisfied to let her handle the scoring. When she is out, they just seem to pull together more.” Victoria coach Walter Yeoman complained that the tiled floor of the Bishop Ryan HS gym in Hamilton was too slippery. The Vikettes lost Gail Vaughan to a spine injury in the semi and Marg Maysmith to an ankle injury in the final.
