In the Manitoba finals, the U of Manitoba Jayvees defeated the St. Vital Grads 53-52 in double overtime in the deciding contest of their best of three finals.

In the Manitoba/Saskatchewan playoff, the U of Manitoba Jayvees defeated Saskatchewan.

        In the national semis, the Simon Fraser Jayvee Clansmen pasted the Halifax Warriors 84-51 after leading 40-23 at the half. John Gordon scored 19, Scott Littlejohn 15, Erwin Braich 11, Ty Kushnir 11, Grant Boland 10 and Mike Ferguson 10 for the Clansmen.

        In the other semi, Windsor AKO dumped the U of Manitoba Junior Bisons 88-79. Windsor took an early 16-8 lead but ran into foul trouble. Through the contest, 33 fouls were called against AKO. Manitoba was up 39-30 at the half. Jim Minello, Bert Smith and Arnie Doimo all fouled out for Windsor in the first 14 minutes of the second half. Manitoba was up by 13 roughly three minutes into the half but Ross Miles’ rebounding helped key an AKO rally. Three straight field goals by Peter Barone, who scored 14 of his nine points in the second half, and two by Bob Dupuis rallied Windsor. They tied the score 73 and eventually pulled away. AKO co-coach Sam Sasso told the Windsor Star that “we lost a little bit of our poise in the first half …But we came back pretty well. I played 10 ballplayers and everybody worked hard.” Bob Dupuis scored 13, Tom Foster 14, Ross Miles 6, Marty Romanow 4, Jim Minello 2, Bert Smith 6, John Alexander 16, Hyland 4 and Arnie Doimo 4. The Bisons were paced by Brian Rumsey’s 20, Dick Kirdei 14, Watson 11, Zahn 6, Downey 8, Mitchell 2, Puttaert 1, Szymkow 2 and Britton 15.

        In the bronze medal contest, Brian Rumsey scored 20 in Manitoba’s 85-55 blowout of the Halifax Warriors. Vic Kirdei added 15 and Glen Leonard 12. Halifax was paced by Robert Upshaw’s 12 points.

        In the final, Windsor AKO clipped the Simon Fraser Jayvee Clansmen 87-79 in overtime. SFU led 46-36 at the half but the Fratmen rallied in the second to take the lead late in the game. John Gordon hit a bucket with two seconds left to tie the game at 75-75 and sent it into overtime. Gordon finished with 22 points. Peter Barone scored 16 for Windsor including six in overtime. SFU was ahead for the first 39 minutes and 45 seconds with Windsor’s first lead of the contest coming at 75-73. “It was very similar to Friday’s game” Windsor co-coach Randy Sasso told the Windsor Star. “It really looked like we were out of it until towards the end, when it really meant something, we seemed to get every loose ball, every rebound, every key basket. Our kids showed a lot of desire … our bench strength paid off. … Arnie Doimo was superb in the clutch. He took control of the boards all by himself …and Barone …he came up with those big baskets when we needed them.” Tom Foster scored 14, Arne Doimo 14, Peter Barone 14, John Alexander 13 and Bob Dupuis 10. For SFU, Scott Littlejohn hit for 26, John Gordon 22 and Mike Ferguson 14. Simon Fraser led 46-36 at the half.
