The University of Alberta Bearcats edged the Memorial U Beothuks 54-51 as Bryan Bradley scored 23. The Beothuks (coached by Ed Browne, manager Neil Flynn, manager Calvin Horwood) included Ron Tobin, Garry Summers, Brian Kavanagh, Reg Baker, Tom Brin, Tony Reardon, Dave Brenton, Austin Brophy, Wayne Sharpe, Gallant and Ed Backle.
The University of Alberta Bearcats dispatched Hamilton Bartlett Brake 77-63 as Brian Bradley scored 19, Dave Holland 15, Art Uhl 13, Doug Nicholls 12, Gord Pengilly 8, Alan Price 5, Jim Pratt 4 and Murray Katz 1. The Bearcats led 35-31 at the half. Bill Lozynsky paced Hamilton with 17, while John Proc, Tom McLellan, Phil Goggins and Phil Marinac all fouled out.
The Vancouver IGA Grocers outlasted the Hamilton Bartlett Brakes 115-109. Steve Lozynsky led Hamilton with 42.
In the decisive match, Herb Wiebe scored 23 to pace the Manitoba Junior Bisons to a 58-55 win over the U of Alberta Bearcats in the decisive match. Ron Waugh added 14, Cam McGinnis 11. The Junior Bisons led 33-27 at the half. Doug Nicholls led Alberta with 14. Dave Holland added 13. Manitoba coach Don Hunter told the Winnipeg Tribune that “we had a real good series. All the kids played extremely well in all the series. We didn’t shoot too well against Alberta in our final game but we were tired. Actually, the score wasn’t indicative of the game. We were in control most of the contest. We missed a couple of bonus throws in the final minute and they scored after that. Three of my boys – Herb Wiebe, who averaged 20 per game, Randy Kusano and Cam McGinnis, were all-stars. Ron Waugh should have been but I guess they look at the scoresheets first. Ron, while he scored his share of points, did a great job on the boards for us. I may be prejudiced but I think we dominated the tournament. The overall calibre wasn’t as good as last year but it was a well-run tournament. Remember, we had only four players back from last year’s championship team. It was a fantastic effort from all the guys. Even the boys who came off the bench, like Jim Matthews, were great. No mistakes.”
