Lathrop also nabbed 13 rebounds in the first half and finished with 20 boards. Warren Meyer added 13, B Lathrop 8, Watson 8, Deschy 7, Kraye 6, Horner 6, Herdman 4, Diakowicz 4 and Bell 3. Calgary led by 39-30 at the half and dominated the boards. John Ohler led the Fratmen with 15. Frank Vitella added 9, Mike Chalut 8, John Smith 8, Tom Burns 7, Pat Goggins 5, Mike Stanko 4 and Pat McMahon 1. Calgary coach Clyde Ogilvie told the Windsor Star that “we don’t have any trouble breaking a press anymore. We worked a lot on ballhandling after that Canada Games tournament.” Windsor coach Doug Cowan said “it was obvious they came here tonight to dethrone the Canada Games silver medalists and they did it. They outplayed and outhustled us and deserved what they got.”
The U of Manitoba Junior Bisons edged the U of Victoria Junior Vikings 70-67. Manitoba trailed by 10 at the half, 40-30, but took advantage of fouls and turnovers to rally in the second half. Brad Craig, 6-6 Daryl Rumsey and Roy Grant rallied the Bisons in the second half but Victoria maintained a slim margin on the hot shooting of guard Jim Hunter. With 5:29 to play, Hunter fouled out and Manitoba closed the gap to one on a Craig steal and a Rumsey layup. Rumsey then fouled out. Herb Wiebe kept Chris Hall under check. Craig hit two free throws to finally put Manitoba in front and a 20-footer to give them a 67-64 lead, which they never relinquished. Darryl Rumsey finished with 28 points to lead the Junior Bisons. Brad Craig added 13, Murray Grafton 12, Roy Grant 11, Wiebe 3 and Waugh 2, while Hedlin, Kusano, Wolfe and Mitchell were scoreless. Hall paced Victoria with 28. Campbell added 13, Hunter 13, Henderson 4, Yamaoka 4 and Abercrombie 2, while Walker, Cervo and Fitzpatrick were scoreless.
The U of Manitoba Junior Bisons clipped Windsor AKO 81-65. The score was tied at 34 at the half. Darryl Rumsey led Manitoba with 31, while 6-6 sub Ron Waugh scored 16, including 11 in the second half, 5-9 Roy Grant 15, Brad Craig 9, Murray Grafton 5, Herb Wiebe 4 and Randy Kusano 1. 6-6 sub Ron Waugh scored 16, including 11 in the second half. Windsor complained about every call and guard Mike Chalut got a technical for protesting a call. Manitoba shot 23-38 from the line, while Windsor was 11-18.
The U of Manitoba Junior Bisons thumped the Memorial U Beothuks 67-39 as Darryl Rumsey hit for 24 points, including 15 in the second half. Ron Waugh added 12 and Brad Craig 9. The Bisons tough 3-2 zone proved the difference. Gary Summers led Memorial with 11. Brian Kavanaugh was held to 6.
Windsor AKO defeated the Memorial U Beothuks 80-64 as John Ohler scored 22, Frank Vitella 15, Burns 9, John Smith 9, Norris 6, Goggins 5, McMahon 5, Stanko 4 and Dave Cogliati 2. Brian Kavanagh led Memorial with 23. Tobin added 10, Reardon 6, Dawe 6, Murphy 5, Prim 5, Summers 4, Barker 3 and Pike 2.
In the U of Victoria Junior Vikings 74-70 win over the U of Calgary Junior Dinosaurs, Jim Hunter scored 24 and Chris Hall 12. Jim Lathrop led Calgary with 19. Calgary led 34-29 at the half and then blew their lead but rallied to within two with 40 seconds to go. The junior Vikes won it at the line down the stretch.
In the U of Calgary Junior Dinosaurs 79-64 win over the Memorial U Beothuks, Mike Horner and Warren Meyer each scored 14 points. Brian Kavanaugh led Memorial with 24.
In the U of Manitoba’s Junior Bisons 85-58 win over the U of Calgary Junior Dinosaurs, Murray Grafton scored 18, including 10 in the second half. The junior Bisons were led by the ballhandling of Brad Craig and Roy Grant. Craig scored 17, including 13 in the first half. Grant added 5, Herb Wiebe 12 and Darryl Rumsey 13, including 7-11 from the line. Manitoba led 46-26 at the half. Calgary, which suffered a letdown after defeating Windsor, was paced by Jim Watson’s 12 points. Keith Reschy added 10.
The U of Victoria Junior Vikings defeated Windsor AKO 78-76 in overtime. AKO’s Mike Stanko missed a free throw with three seconds to go and the game tied at 68. Chris Hall, who finished with 24, scored six of Victoria’s eight buckets in the overtime, including a 30-footer and a 35-foooter. Jim Hunter added 21, Yamoka 14, Campbell 13, Walker 2 and Henderson 2. Tom Burns scored 16 to lead Windsor (coached by Doug Cowan). Pat Goggins 16, John Ohler 11, John Smith 11, Mike Stanko 8, Frank Vitella 6, Pat McMahon 6, Mike Chalut 1 and Robert Smith 1.
In Victoria’s 62-48 win over Memorial, Chris Hall and Jim Hunter each scored 20. Don Abercrombie added 11. Gary Summers paced Memorial with 13. Tony Reardon added 11. The Beothuks (coached by Ed Browne, assistant C Barker, manager Brophy) also included R Barker, Tobin, Gallant, Wetzel, Rattray, Campbell, Dawe, Reddy, Kavanagh, Kureprel and Wadden.
