In opening game of the national draw, which required a $1,058 entry fee, host Windsor AKO thrashed the St. John’s Holy Cross Crusaders 120-51 by full court pressing the entire game. Windsor went on an 11-0 run early in second half to seal the victory. AKO shot 43-93 from the field, 32-40 from the line and out-rebounded the Crusaders 54-22. Fred Logan scored 17, Billy Todd 16, John Smith 14, Laurie Cahill 14, Bruce Norris 13, Pat Goggins 12, Sam Sasso 11, Pat McMahon 10, Mike Chalut 9 and Glen Ladouceur 4. Brian Murphy scored 23 to pace the Crusaders (coached by Jim Fitzpatrick). The Crusaders hit .256 from the field, 11-20 from the line. Matt McCarthy added 8, Wayne Stanford 6, Scurry 5, Roche 5 and Kirkland 4. Crusaders coach Jim Fitzpatrick did not chastise AKO for running up the score. “You can’t blame them. The way the tourney is set up, point total could mean the championship.” Windsor AKO’s 6-5 centre Al Warnock did not play in tourney because of an elbow injury. AKO coach Doug Cowan told the Windsor Star “how can you hold these guys down? You can’t send a sub in and tell him not to score.”

Doug Kempt added 14, Dave Littlewood 13, Ron Feist 12, Peter Petersen 5, Gary Smith 4 and Rod Belinski 2, while Dennis Acoose was scoreless. Victoria coach Gary Taylor told the Windsor Star “I wouldn’t say we played one of our best games tonight. I know we’re capable of handling the ball better. But their press was effective against us.” Mount Royal coach Jack Kenyon said “we had too many turnovers and were unable to put together enough momentum to catch them.”

John Smith, Bruce Norris and Pat McMahon’s outside shooting turned the tide as they went on a 9-2 run early in the second half. AKO hit 37-53 from the field and the end of the game was a parade to the foul line. Laurie Cahill scored 23 including 11-14 free throws, Sam Sasso 13, Mike Chalut 9, Fred Logan 13, Bruce Norris 10, Mike Chalut 9, Pat McMahon 6 and Pat Goggins 4. Chris hall led Victoria with 25. Brent Mullin added 12, Gordon Hushal 11, Tim Reiger 7, Pratt 7, Fergison Andison 5 and Jack Yamaoka 2. Victoria coach Gary Taylor told the Windsor Star that AKO had “too much speed and bench. They just keep coming at you.” Windsor coach Doug Cowan noted “this has to be the greatest thing that can ever happen to a fellow. These 12 fellows are the greatest. …they played and won three tough ball games, never once letting up. Sure, we were handicapped by a lack of height but we overcame that by going 110%. Did you ever see another AKO team with that much hustle and desire? … Chalut and Sasso are exciting ballplayers … the whole squad seems to get a lift when they’re on the floor. I’d have to say that Smith and Logan are our best two-way players. Logan deserves all the credit he can get … as the fellows respect him so much.” Tim Reiger, Jack Yamaoka and Brent Mullin all fouled out for the Vikes in the third quarter, leaving the 8-man squad severely depleted in the final frame.
