       In the Quebec finals, the Montreal University Settlement Orchids defeated Snowden YMHA 96-52 as Ray Mischook scored 31, Nav Zanolin 18 and Frank Dobrofsky 11. The Orchids led 55-17 at the half. Richard Thoman led Snowdon with 16. Steve Sperling added 15 and Dave Gillman 14. YMHA also included Saul Radulovic.

       In round one of the nationals, held at McMaster University in Hamilton, the Montreal University Settlement Orchids defeated Hamilton Quigley’s 61-47. Montreal led 22-17 early. Ray Mischook paced the Orchids with 21. Frank Dobrofsky added 14, Nar Zanolin 10, McKean 6, Atkinson 6, McKendricks 2, Wozniak 1 and Alleyne 1, while Yashin was scoreless. Mark Shekter led Quigley’s with 12. Rick Potter added 9, Urbanic 5, Najas 5, Olexiuk 5, Katz 4, Dalla Riva 4, Jackson 2 and Maskauskas 1, while Wylie was scoreless.

       The Victoria Chinooks defeated the Winnipeg Buffaloes 65-40 as Ken Jackson scored 14, Don Gregory 13, John Lauvaas 9, Ken Gregory 8, Ron Bowker 8, Barnswell 5, Humber 2, Newnham 2 and Frampton 2. Victoria coach Ollie Goldsmith told the Victoria Daily Colonist that “our first half defensive play was the turning point of the game. … Ken Gregory played an outstanding game on defence for us.” Larry Chapman led Winnipeg with 14. Rod Fowler added 10, Hunter 4, Sheerle 4, Botting 4, Irwin 2 and Hollinger 2, while Ruppel and Komarniki were scoreless.

       In round two, the Victoria Chinooks defeated Windsor AKO 68-51. The Chinooks trailed 29-27 at the half but rallied with tough man-to-man defence. Ron Bowker led Victoria with 17. John Lauvaas added 15, Ken Gregory 12, Ken Jackson 10, Rick Barnswell 9 and Spaven 5, while Gregory was scoreless. Chinooks coach Ollie Goldsmith told the Hamilton Spectator that “the style of play here is a little more rugged than we are used to.” Dave Mollard scored 15 to lead AKO (coached by Leon Truant). Dick Basinski added 10, Walker 6, Steve Rogin 6, Ted Hook 5, Andy Vince 5 and McLellan 4, while St. Louis was scoreless. Windsor coach Leon Truant said “our shooting was cold … We also played their type of game, slow and deliberate. They closed off our inside shooting and we couldn’t hit from the outside.”

       Hamilton Quigley’s defeated Calgary Mount Royal 83-67. Leon Mauskauskus led Quigley’s with 25. Mark Shekter added 14, Jim Potter 14, Urbanic 13, Dalla Riva 8, Morrison 2 and Olexiuk 1. Quigley’s coach Wes Hicks told the Hamilton Spectator that “our zone defence worked in the first half and gave us our lead and we never looked back. … But they key was our fastbreaking. The boys never let up. They just kept flying.” Ashley Court led the Cougars with 29. Eugene Allen added 15, Gary Cpollier 6, Randy Milner 6, Stillwaugh 3, Gainer 3, Myers 2, Baker 2 and Shields 1. “Our outside shooting was terrible and we played a bad defensive game,” Cougars coach Jack Kenyon told Canadian Press. “Randy Milner, our best outside shooter couldn’t hit a basket and that hurt us.” Kenyon told the Spectator that the “pace almost got out of hand at times. Our shooting was off the in the first half and we played a bad defensive game. Our best outside shooter, Randy Milner, couldn’t hit the basket and that hurt.”

       In round three, Calgary Mount Royal eliminated the Winnipeg Buffaloes 89-64 as Ashley Court scored 21 buckets, and 2 free throws for 44 points. Eugene Allen added 13, Ken Shields 10, Gary Collier 8, Randy Milner 5, Clayton Gainer 5, Don Layton 3 and Don Stillwaugh 2, while Bill Myers, Ken Baker and Jack Putman were scoreless. Duane Botting led Winnipeg with 18. Larry Chapman added 12, Pete Komarniki 11, Bill Irwin 8, Sandy Hollinger 6, Bob Hunter 6, Pete Scheerle 2 and Rod Fowler 1.

       Windsor AKO eliminated the Hamilton Quigley’s 87-62 after leading 57-24 at the half. Dave Mollard paced Windsor with 19. Frank Bellamy added 14, Dick Basinski 13, Andy Vince 13, Hool 11, Walker 6, Campbell 4, Mclennan 2 and Steve Rogin 2, while St. Louis and Touchie were scoreless. Windsor coach Truant told the Hamilton Spectator that “we kept on running and didn’t relax. The boys had made up their minds they would play defence and not let Quigley’s get a shot away. … They just dug right in there.” Peter Dalla Riva scored 15 to lead Hamilton (coach Wes Hicks). Haras added 14, Leon Maukauskus 12, Jim Potter 7, Urbanic 5, Ray Olexiuk 3, Bruce Morrison 2, Greg Jackson 2 and Mark Shekter 2, while Katz was scoreless. Quigley’s coach Wes Hicks said “we had no continuity of offence… Our shooting was bad. Our rebounding was bad and because we got behind so much, we were forced to switch from our zone defence to our secondary man-to-man.”

       In round four, Ken Jackson scored 18 as the Victoria Chinooks defeated the Montreal University Settlement Orchids 60-57. John Laauvaas added 13, Ken Gregory 12, Ron Bowker 10 and Doug Gregory 7, while Humber, Frampton, Newnham, Barnswell and Spaven were scoreless. Ray Mischook paced the Orchids with 26 (alternately reported as 27). Frank Dobrofsky added 17, Wells 7, Alleyne 3, Atkinson 2 and Wozniak 2, while McKean, McKendricks, Zanolin and Yashin were scoreless. Chinooks coach Ollie Goldsmith told the Victoria Daily Colonist that “I think we were lucky. You know we threw the ball away at least three times near the end when the score was close.”

       Calgary Mount Royal eliminated Windsor AKO 70-63. Windsor led 37-26 at the half but Ashley Court rallied Calgary, coached by Jack Kenyon, by scoring 15 points in the second half. Court finished with 17. Ken Shields added 16, Allen 14, Milner 12 and Gary Collier 11, while Potman, Stillwaugh, Meyers, Gainer and Layton were scoreless. Andy Vince led Windsor with 15. Dave Mollard added 13, Basinski 10, McLennan 8, Walker 6, Rogin 6 and Hook 5, while St. Louis, Campbell and Bellamy were scoreless.

       In the semi, Calgary Mount Royal was up by 15 in the first half but the Montreal University Settlement Orchids outhustled and outscrapped the Cougars to pull out a 58-57 win. Trailing 58-55, Ashley Court threw the ball away but seconds later hit a jumper to cut the margin to one. After Montreal missed a free throw, Calgary’s Gary Collier let fly with a long jumper which hit the rim and bounced away. Ray Mischook won it with a three-point play which broke a 57-57 tie with 90 seconds to go. Mischook finished with 24. Gord Wells added 10, Frank Dubrofsky 9, Nav Zanolin 7, Alleyne 4, McKendricks 2 and Wozniak 2, while McKean and Yashin were scoreless. Ken Shields led the Cougars (coached by Jack Kenyon) with 16. Ashley Court added 13, Randy Milner 9, Eugene Allen 9, Gary Collier 8 and Dan Stillwaugh 2, while Bill Myers and Dan Layton were scoreless. The Cougars also included Steele Tollestrup, Ken Baker and Jack Potman. Calgary led 35-25 at the half.

       In the final, Victoria proved its supremacy by taking the lead from the start and coasting to a 61-47 win over the Montreal University Settlement Orchids. With the victory, the Chinooks also captured the Hudson Bay Cup as Western champs. John Lauvaas paced the Chinooks with 21. Ken Gregory added 14, Ken Jackson 9, Ron Bowker 8, Doug Gregory 7, Don Frampton 2 and Rick Barnswell 2, while Rick Humber, Jack Newnham and Barney Spaven were scoreless. Victoria led by 12 at half. Montreal rallied to within six but Lauvaas hit four in a row and Vic soon pulled ahead by 19. Victoria’s tight man-to-man defence and the ballhandling of Ron Bowker, as well as the shooting of Lauvaas, proved the difference. Victoria took a 14-11 lead at the quarter, a 33-21 lead at the half. Lauvass finished with 21 and Gregory 14. Mischook led the Orchids with 27. Wells added 8, Frank Dubrofsky 5, McKendricks 3, Zanolin 2 and Wosniak 1. Coach Ollie Goldsmith told the Victoria Daily Colonist that “it was just a great team effort, as it has been all week. But you have to give credit to the Gregory boys, Doug and Ken. … Both played fine games.” Orchids coach Bob Pollock told the Hamilton Spectator “I guess that Calgary game took too much out of us. But it wouldn’t be fair to say that just because Victoria played great ball. That is a tremendous team and they certainly deserved the win. No doubt about it.” No team scored more than 60 points against Victoria in the tourney.
