Vancouver coach Lance Hudson told Canadian Press that his troops effectively caused Fry to foul out. “We moved all our men to one side and gave the ball to Mike Lemon. In the national finals, Hamilton CYO Montclairs d’d Vancouver YMCA 65-61; 73-65; 65-61; (3g-0). The national final was a rematch of the 1959 national title series. With the win, Eastern Canadian cities had won 10 of the previous 12 national titles.
In game one, before a sparse crowd of 151 in Vancouver, the Hamilton CYO Montclairs were in control throughout the contest as they prevailed 65-61. Vancouver rallied to within two late in the second half, but Brian Hotrum hit a crucial bucket to seal the Montclair victory. Brian Hotrum led CYO with 22. Cliff Goodwin added 18, Al Savickas 4, Gordon Davidson 2, Russell 2 and Doug Harrison 1, while Wilson and Forsyth were scoreless. Mike Lemon led YMCA with 17. Bob Brunelle added 15, Hart 11, Don Boyd 9, Lance Fletcher 7 and Clay 2, while Price, Corben, Smith, Phillips and Wallace were scoreless.
In game two, Hamilton took a 2-0 lead in the series with a convincing 73-65 win. Vancouver took an early 17-11 lead in the first ten minutes but the Montclairs rallied to a 32-31 halftime lead. Vancouver’s Mike Lemon and Lance Fletcher hit two successive lay-ups to tie the game at 52 with eight minutes to go but Jimmy Russell hit a bucket to give CYO the lead again and key a 6-0 run, which also featured a Cliff Goodwin jumper and two free throws by Russell. The game was never in doubt after that. Goodwin and Doug Harrison each scored 16 for the Montclairs. Jerry Raphael and Alex Savickis each added 13, Russell 9 and Davidson 6, while Forsyth, Willson and Hotrum were scoreless. The Montclairs shot 21-24 from the free throw line but were out-rebounded by a 47-45 margin. Vancouver was led by Bob Brunelle’s 24. Lance Fletcher added 16, Lemon 13, Clay 4, Hart 4, Boyd 2 and Price 2, while Corben, Wallace and Phillips were scoreless. After the contest, Hamilton manager Vern McDonald predicted the series would be wrapped up in three. “We are in better shape than the Y team.”
The Montclairs swept the series with a narrow 65-61 victory in game three. But the contest was close. Hamilton was up 18-11 after ten minutes and 30-26 at the half. But Vancouver’s Mike Lemon keyed a rally early in the second half, putting Vancouver up 33-32 with a bucket. Vancouver maintained the lead for the next few minutes and were ahead 44-43 with ten minutes to go when once again, they collapsed down the stretch. Cliff Goodwin hit two free throws to give CYO a 46-45 lead with 7:51 to go and Hamilton never again relinquished its edge. Goodwin and Jerry Raphael each scored 18 for Hamilton. Harrison added 16, Russell 7 and Savickas 6, while Hotrum, Davidson, Forsyth and Willson were scoreless. Mike Lemon paced Vancouver with 25. Brunelle added 23, Boyd 6, Corben 3, Hart 2 and Phillips 2, while Clay, Price, Fletcher and Smith were scoreless. CYO out-rebounded Vancouver 45-42.
