In the sudden-death British Columbia final, the Victoria Tillicums nipped the Vancouver Burrard Lions 25-24 as Hampton scored 8, Davies 6, Veitch 6, Anderson 3 and Windle 2, while Abbott, Kirchner, Smith and Whan were scoreless. Pulos led the Lions with 9. McAfee added 7, hardy 6 and Keeley 2, while Oliver, Stevens, Tait, Mahon and Madill were scoreless.

Although the Tillicums won the B.C. title, British Columbia, ever an anomaly in Canadian hoops history, chose Vancouver YMCA, who had lost in the intermediate provincial playoffs, to represent the province in the Dominion playoffs. They were eligible because the Dominion junior tournament required that all players be under age 20 on January 1, 1950. It was also believed that YMCA gave Vancouver, which was hosting the finals, its best shot at winning the title for the city. Shortly before the Western finals, YMCA’s Con Bohnen and Bob Grundison were declared ineligible. YMCA then picked up John Russell and Ralph Bouwman from the intermediate champ U.B.C. Braves.

In the national finals, the Winnipeg Stellars defeated Windsor A.K.O. 47-41; 43-41; 45-50; 46-30 (3g-1).

In game one, held at Winnipeg, the Stellars rallied from a five-point deficit at the three-quarter mark to win 47-41. Windsor led 12-7 at quarter, tied at 20 at half. Paul Granovsky paced the Stellars with 11. Mitch Baryluk added 10, Borden Cerka 7, Rich Bevan 6, Glovitski 4, Charlie Brower 4, Mike Skwark 3 and Morley Rypp 2, while Briskey and Kozak were scoreless. Al Deluca led Windsor with 14. Eddie Miles added 11, Bill Smith 6, Tom Docherty 5, Gerry Lemon 4 and John Kolyvek 1, while Eddie Niziolek, Jim Tisdale, Denny Morrison, Bill Smyth and Sammy Lees were scoreless. After the game, Windsor coach Frank Wansborough complained bitterly about officials Ray Wittenberg and John Kuryk. They were “biased. …I won’t have those two men on the floor in the next game.”

In game two, Winnipeg prevailed 43-41. Winnipeg took a 7-2 lead and were up 12-9 at the quarter. But Windsor rallied to take a 13-12 lead on an Eddie Niziolek field goal. Windsor was up 23-18 at the half, controlled the ball well, good ball handling but Winnipeg rallied on field goals by Dick Bevan, Mitch Baryluk and Al Glovitski to take a 34-33 lead at the three-quarter mark. The teams traded the lead back and forth in the fourth. Gerry Leman fouled out. The Stellars took a two-point lead with 1:45 to go, with possession, held the ball to run out the clock. Dick Bevan scored 11, Paul Granovsky 7, Borden Cirka 6, Charlie Brower 1, Ed Brisky 3, Morley Rypp 3, Ted Kozak 2 and Al Glovitski 4. For Windsor, Eddie Miles scored 13, Gerry Leman 8, Eddie Niziolek 2, Bob Smyth 7, Jim Tisdale 3, John Kolyvek 3, Al DeLuca 2, Tom Doherty 1 and Smith 2. Despite Wansborough’s vow, the refs were once again Kuryk and Wittenberg.

In game three, Windsor prevailed 50-45 after leading 14-11, 28-22 and 37-36 at the quarters. Eddie Niziolek led the AKOs with 11. Al Deluca added 10, Gerry Lemon 9, John Kolyvek 5, Tom Docherty 5, Morrison 4, Eddie Miles 3, Jim Tisdale 2 and Smith 1, while Bob Smyth was scoreless. Borden Cirka led the Stellars with 12. Mitch Baryluk added 9, Al Glovitski 7, Paul Granovsky 6, Charlie Brower 5, Dick Bevan 4 and Ted Kozak 3, while Mike Skwark and Ed Brisky wee scoreless.

In game four, Winnipeg took the series with a 46-30 victory. Led by Mitch Baryluk’s pressure on the ball, Winnipeg was ahead 25-13 at the half, 38-20 at three quarter mark. Windsor had led 6-5 at the quarter. The Stellars demonstrated deadly shooting and precision passing. AKO had four technicals called against them in the fourth quarter by refs Kuryk and Wittenberg. Mitch Baryluk led the Stellars with 15, while 6-8 centre Borden Cirka scored 9, Charlie Brower 9, Mike Skwark 3, Al Glovitski 3, Dick Bevan 3, Ed Brisky 2 and Paul Granovsky 2, while Morley Rypp and Ted Kozak were scoreless. Tom Docherty led AKO with 9, Gerry Leman 8, Al Deluca 6, Eddie Miles 3, Smith 2, Eddie Niziolek 1 and Jim Tisdale 1, while Morrison, John Kolyvek and Bob Smyth were scoreless. The team was molded by coach Martin Terry and manager Mitch Baryluk, evolving from a group that played Sunday School Basketball at the dingy, old Stella Mission near Aberdeen School. They did not have a gym and practiced in a 20 x 30-foot basement. Most of the team had graduated from St. John’s and Isaac Newton High Schools. The squad finished (38-3) on the season. Charlie Brouwer graduated after the season and became the squad’s assistant coach. “They’re just one solid chain,” coach Martin Terry told Canadian Press. The team “talks to God before every game.”
