        In their opener, Canada crushed Cuba 85-43 by dominating the paint and the boards. “It was great to get a win under our belt and start the tournament off with a win. We improved as the game went on and got solid contributions from all 12 players,” said Canadian co-coach Carly Clarke. Canada did not score until the 6:17 mark in the first quarter but settled in and took a 13-12 lead after one quarter. Cuba opened the second quarter on a 6-3 run. Canada countered with a 6-0 run and took a 33-25 lead at half. Canada took control early in the second half, and led 61-36 after three quarters. Alyssa Jerome paced Canada with 16 on 5-10 from the floor, 1-2 from the arc, 3-4 from the line, 8 boards, 6 assists and 3 steals.         Canada improved to (2-0) by whipping Venezuela 76-45. They again dominated the boards and led 18-8, 38-23 and 60-34 at the quarters. Co-coach Carly Clarke said it was “a great win today versus a scrappy Venezuela team in front of a great crowd. We maintained our composure and got a chance to work on some different things.” Taya Hanson paced Canada with 11 on 2-3 from the floor, 1-2 from the arc, 4-4 from the line, 4 boards and 4 assists.         Canada closed out pool play at (3-0) by clipping Brazil 62-50. Brazil dominated early leading 21-13 after one quarter. But Canada got their transition game going to rally within 30-28 at the half. Canada opened the second half with a 17-3 run and led 47-39 after three quarters and then iced it with a 10-2 run over the final 2.5 minutes of play. Canada dominated the paint, scoring 30 in the blocks and controlling the boards. Kyla Shand paced Canada with 17 on 6-8 from the floor, 5-11 from the line and 7 boards.         In the semis, Canada stomped Mexico 70-42 after leading 27-24, 46-32 and 56-38 at the quarters. Co-coach Carly Clarke said it was a “great win over Mexico tonight in front of a packed house. Our girls kept their composure as Mexico got off to a hot shooting start.” Alyssa Jerome paced Canada with 16 on 6-11 from the floor, 0-4 from the arc, 4-6 from the line, 16 boards and 3 assists. Hailey Brown added 14 on 1-5 from the floor, 2-5 from the arc, 6-6 from the line and 4 boards. Macaela Crone added 10 on 2-6 from the floor, 2-6 from the arc, 4 boards, 2 assists and 2 steals.         In the final, Canada captured their first women’s age-group FIBA crown by nipping Brazil 72-71. Canada relinquished a 17-6 run over the course of the third and fourth quarters, repeatedly coughing up the ball and appearing panicked. But Tournament MVP Alyssa Jerome hit a huge trey with 1:31 to play to give Canada a 60-56 lead. Rosane Makolo Mualuja hit a tough baseline runner to give Canada a 63-60 lead with 42.9 seconds to play but Izabella Leite countered with a trey to tie the score at 63 with 38.3 seconds to play. Sarah Donovan notched a putback with 22.5 seconds on the clock but Leite hit a driving layup to force overtime. In the extra session, Aiden Rainford got an inside feed for a layup and then Jerome hit a pair of free throws to make the score 69-65 for Canada. Leite answered with a trey and then Canada kept hitting 1 of 2 free throws. Makolo hit one, and then Jerome another with 22.5 seconds on the clock, and finally, Jerome again with 14.2 seconds on the clock to make it 72-68 for Canada. Leite answered with a trey with 4.9 seconds remaining. Makolo missed a pair of free throws with 2.9 seconds remaining but a long rebound left Brazil with no chance for a last second shot to win it. “What a game. I’m incredibly proud of our girls – they kept their composure. We knew Brazil wouldn’t go away and it would be a tough 40-minute battle. It ended being 45-minute battle,” said coach Carly Clarke. “The girls stuck to our number one key, which was rebounding, and I think that ended up being the difference in the game. Brazil made some huge shots down the stretch but we kept our composure and stuck to the game plan and that ended up paying off in the end. I’m incredibly proud of our effort and incredibly proud of these girls for their passion, their pride and their unity. They stuck together through that whole game and whole tournament and we got a great result.” The score was knotted at 11 after one quarter. Canada led 29-23 at the half and 44-37 after three quarters. “We are very proud of what this young team has achieved and appreciate all the tremendous work the coaches and support staff have put in over the course of the year,” said Denise Dignard, Director of Women’s High Performance at Canada Basketball. “I also want to recognize the contribution of our targeted coaches and all the school/club coaches who are focusing on the long-term development of these female athletes towards helping them become world class in women’s basketball.” Alyssa Jerome paced Canada with 17 on 1-10 from the floor, 3-5 from the arc, 6-12 from the line, 12 boards and 2 assists.
