Canada drops its opener to Cuba by an 82-62 count. Christine Shewchuk hit the first bucket of the game but then Cuba’s transition game took over. Canada trailed 36-28 at the half. Double-teaming at the half court, they completely disrupted Canada’s offensive and went on a 12-0 run to open the second half. Shona Thorburn hit a three to rally Canada within five but with Jody Bell and Katy Paterson fouling out, it was soon game over. “We had some great shot opportunities from executing the halfcourt offence,” said coach Allison McNeill. “But they just didn’t drop for us. Our defensive effort was great in the first half against a very athletic Cuban team who loves to score in transition. We needed to continue to improve our defence throughout the second half of the game.” Carolyn Ganes led Canada with 14 points and 7 boards. Shona Thorburn added 10 points and 7 boards.
Canada drops an 83-64 decision to Brazil despite Shona Thorburn’s 17-point effort. Canada fell behind quickly but rallied to within one late in the first half on Carolyn Ganes play in the paint. But then Brazil stepped up its defensive intensity and capitalized on Canada’s turnovers to take command. Brazil shot .540 from the floor, while Canada shot .360. Ganes scored 13 and nabbed 7 boards while hitting 7-7 from the line. “I am very proud of the way we played today,” said coach Allison McNeill. “We were better on the boards – more aggressive offensively and defensively. We are improving with each game and that is important.”
Canada captured its first win by defeating Venezuela 57-55. Danielle Langford drew an offensive charge in the first 30 seconds of the game and Shona Thorburn grabbed three defensive boards to set the tone. But Venezuela ripped off a 9-0 run and was ahead 29-22 at the half, despite Thorburn’s 10 points. Canada came out strong defensively in the second half, holding Venezuela scoreless for four minutes. Langford hit a three and Jodi Bell a bucket in the paint to tie the game at 33. Sarah Zagorski drilled three from beyond the arc as Canada moved ahead by four with a minute to play. But costly turnovers allowed Venezuela to tie the game at 55 with 24 seconds to play. With six seconds on the clock, Katy Paterson hit a bucket in the paint to give Canada the win. Canada outrebounded Venezuela 40-25. Thorburn scored 14 and nabbed 9 boards. Carolyn Ganes grabbed 10 boards. Zagorski scored 9 while Paterson scored 8 and grabbed 7 boards. Canada shot .900 from the line while Venezuela was .620. “It was an incredible team effort today,” said head coach Allison McNeill. “Defensively we did the things we needed to do to stop their penetration and we had contributions from everyone offensively. Our team responded well after the first half to bounce back and take charge of the game.”
Canada fails to qualify for medal finals.
In the 5-8th classifications, Canada throttles Puerto Rico 89-38 in a foulfest. Canada held Puerto Rico scoreless over the final four minutes and breezed in transition.
In the battle for fifth, Canada waxes Venezuela 96-57. Thorburn scored off the opening tip and it was quickly over. Katy Paterson scored 21. Thorburn added 17 and five assists. Christine Shewchuk tossed in 13. “In our first game against Venezuela we played their style of game,” said coach Allison McNeill. “This time around we imposed the Canadian style of basketball – tough defence and running the floor.”
