Canada opened by pounding Chile 21-10. “I’m really proud,” Michelle Plouffe said. “We had a short training camp, we had some good preparation and I’m just proud of how we continue to fight together. If we get down, it hasn’t happened yet in this tournament, [but if it does], we fight back to the end. We play together, we play with heart and I love this group.” Plouffe added that it was a pleasure to again play with her sister Katherine. “We have a lot of fun. We get at each other training, so it’s always fun to put the same jersey on and play together.” Kacie Bosch paced Canada with 7 on 4-5 from the floor, 1-3 from the arc, 1-1 from the line and 4 boards. Canada improved to (2-0) by clubbing Israel 22-5. Paige Crozon hit back-to-back two-pointers as Canada took command with a 15-3 margin. Canada fell to (1-2) after dropping an 18-16 overtime decision to Spain. Canada led 5-2 early but Spain kept drilling mid-range jumpers and took an 8-7 lead on a Marta Canella bucket from the arc. Spain began dominating the offensive boards as they took a 13-12 lead. Katherine Plouffe knotted the score at 13 with bucket. But Canella banked in a two-pointer. Paige Crozon answered with a two-pointer to knot the score at 15. Michelle Plouffe notched a bucket in the paint to give Canada a 16-15 lead but Canella forced overtime with a prayer from the foul line at the buzzer. Canada closed out pool play at (3-1), qualifying for the round of 16, by clipping the Netherlands 21-12. “I’m super proud of my team,” Katherine Plouffe said. “We had a hard loss against Spain last game and we talked about this being character building. This is a long tournament. In the round of 16, Canada dispatched Germany 22-13. “Germany is a great team, they have a lot of chemistry, they’ve played together for a while,” Paige Crozon said. “We played them in the women’s series final last year and lost so we know they’re a really great team and really had to prepare coming into this game.” Canada rallied from an early 4-3 deficit by notching a 7-0 run featuring and and-one from Michelle Plouffe, a bomb from beyond the arc by Katherine Plouffe and inside bucket from Paige Crozon. Germany trimmed the margin to 10-8 but Michelle Plouffe and Katherine Plouff each notched a pair of bucket before Crozon iced it with a series of perimeter jumpers. In the quarterfinals, Canada dispatched the United States 14-10. “I am just super proud of our team,” said Michelle Plouffe. “We came in here, and to us, we thought we could get to the podium, but I think to other people we were an underdog, so I’m just so proud of how we fought through each match.” Canada took an early 4-1 lead but the Americans rallied to knot the score at 6-6. Both teams went scoreless for more than two minutes. Each notched a bucket to make it 7-7 but Katherine Plouffe and Michelle Plouffe each drained a bomb from beyond the arc, and Katherine Plouffe added an inside bucket off a feed from her sister as Canada took a 12-7 lead. Hailey Van Lith notched a pair of long jumpers to draw the United States within 12-10 but Kacie Bosch and Katherine Plouffe had the answers in the final minute as Canada pulled off the upset over the previously undefeated Americans. In the semis, Canada edged Lithuania 16-14. Canada exploded to a 12-4 lead as Michelle and Katherine Plouffe repeatedly worked free in the blocks. They extended the lead to 15-6 as Katherine Plouffe notched a trio of buckets in the paint. But Lithuania closed out the affair with 8-1 run and Canada held on for the win as Paige Crozon blocked a final two-point attempt at the buzzer. In the final, France prevailed 16-13 in a classic confrontation between quickness and size. France broke to a 3-0 lead as their speed rattled the Canadians into miscues. Although Katherine Plouffe and Michelle Plouffe rallied Canada to within 15-12, Hortense Limouzin hit a bucket and Marie-Eve Paget a free throw as France pulled out the win. “The Canada team is really a great team,” France’s Marie-Eve Paget said. “You’re not in the final if you’re not a great team. We played against them in a friendly game before the World Cup and we lost twice, so this is a revenge.” Hortense Limouzin paced France with 5 on 5-9 from the floor. Laetitia Guapo added 5 on 0-2 from the floor, 2-5 from the arc, 1-1 from the line and 4 boards. Marie-Eve Paget notched 4 on 1-2 from the floor, 1-4 from the arc, 1-3 from the line and 3 boards.
