West Germany notched a pair of last second buckets to dump Canada 88-82. Canada trailed by two with four minutes to play when West Germany nailed a pair of perimeter buckets. Richard Stewart and Tom Johnson each scored 13 to pace Canada.

The Soviet Union dumped Canada 76-65 as the Canadians struggled from the free throw line, hitting only 10-21 from the charity stripe, while the Soviets were 18-22. The Soviet Union led 37-34 at the half. Coach Ken Shields said the poor free throw shooting was the difference. “Otherwise we played very good defence and held them to just 30 per cent shooting from the field. Our team played its heart out.” Richard Stewart led Canada with 14.

In its fourth match, Canada defeated Italy 83-82. The Canadians out-rebounded Italy and played aggressive defense to take a 42-37 lead at the half. They suffered from a shaky second half and trailed by four with four minutes to play but J.D. Jackson hit a pair from beyond the arc to pull out the win. Eric Hammond and Spencer McKay each nabbed 9 boards. McKay led Canada with 18 points.

Canada closed out round-robin play by thrashing Taipei 107-60.

Canada fails to make medal round. Drops to 5th-8th classifications.

In the 5-8th semis, Tom Johnson scored 20 as Canada defeated Puerto Rico 96-89. Canada led 54-46 at the half but committed 11 quick turnovers to fall behind by six with three minutes to play. But they converted a series of putback rebounds to pull out the win. J.D. Jackson added 19 and Richard Stewart 15.

In the fifth-place match, Australia defeats Canada 74-68. Canada trailed 37-36 at half-time and stayed close to the Australians for most of the second half. With four minutes remaining, Australia hit a three-point shot to go up by four and held on to win. Spencer McKay led Canada with 20. Wade Smith added 11.
