        In their opener, Canada rallied from a late deficit to force overtime as they defeated host Lithuania 69-63. “I thought our team showed a lot of character and heart,” said head coach, David DeAveiro. “The difference in the game was the way we controlled the offensive glass in the 2nd half, and cutting down our turnovers.” Both teams appeared nervous early, committing 15 turnovers in the first quarter as Lithuania built a 17-13 lead. Canada trailed by as many as 13 in the second quarter but Marial Shayok hit a jumper late in the frame to cut the lead to 38-30 at the half. Canada opened the second half with a 12-2 run to take a slim lead and from that point on, it became a seesaw battle as no team was able to extend the lead larger than two points. Tyrell Bellot-Green hit a shot in tight with under a minute to go in the quarter to tie the game at 47-47. In the final frame, Lithuania was able to create separation as they went on a 7-0 run to gain the 54-47 lead. With 1:41 left in the game, Lithuania nailed a three-pointer to take a 61-56 lead. With 1:17 left in the quarter, Chris Egi was able to steal a pass and dunk it to cut the lead to three points. Marial Shayok with 10 seconds left took a three-pointer that banked in and sent the game to overtime. In overtime, Canada dominated with a 13-2 run. “This is a big win, taking our first game against Lithuania. It showed our character. We just stayed together and fought until the end,” said Shayok. When asked if he called his bank on the decisive three-ball, Shayok smiled and said: “I had a feeling it was going in. My shot was off today, but I’m just thankful it went in.” Marial Shayok paced Canada with 5-10 from the floor, 1-7 from the arc, 3-3 from the line, 3 boards and 3 steals. In their second match, Canada dug themselves and early hole and never emerged as they fell 66-53 to Croatia. “I thought we played extremely hard today defensively. But in the end our inability to make free-throws and rebound defensively down the stretch is what hurt us,” said Canadian coach David DeAveiro. “I’m pleased with the effort.” Canada was unable to take care of the ball in the first quarter, turning the ball over 6 times as Croatia went on a 16-4 run and built a 20-9 lead. In the second quarter, Canada’s defense stepped up and was able to limit Croatia to only eight points in the quarter. Croatia led as much as 13 points in the frame, but a late run by Canada cut the deficit to 28-22 at the half. Canada continued to cut the deficit in the third quarter. Canada was able to take better care of the basketball and by doing so, drew within 41-38 after three quarters. With 7:22 left in the quarter, Anthony Pate hit a shot to tie the game at 43 but Croatia took command down the stretch. Mario Hezonja paced Croatia with 21 on 7-13 from the floor, 2-8 from the arc, 1-1 from the line, 11 boards and 2 steals.         In their third game, Canada started slow but battled back to nip Argentina 80-76. Argentina stormed out of the game and built a 25-14 lead after one quarter. But Canada rallied to take a 38-37 lead at the half. In the third quarter, Canada and Argentina went back and forth with each other. For the majority of the quarter the lead was no bigger than a two-possession game. Canada trailed 55-54 after three quarters. Canada in the fourth quarter built an early six-point lead, but Argentina kept the game close and tied the game with free-throws with 1:05 left in the game. Canada answered with a 3-pointer by Patrick Steeves with 53 seconds left in the game and held on for the win.         In their fourth game, Canada was pounded 83-62 by Spain. In the first quarter, Canada was able to build a seven-point lead, but with less than two minutes to go in the quarter, Spain was able to go on a 9-1 run to knot the score at 20 after one frame. Spain opened the second quarter with a 12-2 run before Canada rallied within 39-33 at the half. During the third quarter, Canada was able to keep the game within five points in the first five minutes of the frame but Spain exploded with a 13-2 run to take a 62-46 lead after three quarters. Canada drew no closer. Alberto Abalde Diaz paced Spain with 21 on 7-9 from the floor, 2-4 from the arc, 1-1 from the line and 6 boards. But Korea rallied to knot the score at 23 with 6:34 to play in the first half before Canada regained a 32-27 lead at the half. Canada increased its lead to 54-42 after three quarters and pulled away down the stretch. Malcom Duvivier paced Canada with 16 on 2-3 from the floor, 4-5 from the arc and 3 boards.         In the quarterfinals, Canada was pounded 113-59 by the United States. Canada came out fast as they were able to take an early 9-5 lead but US knotted the score at 13, then ripped off a 13-2 run as they built a 26-15 lead after one quarter. The Americans played a press in the second quarter and built their lead to 46-30 at the half. They extended their lead to 78-43 after three quarters and pulled away in the spanking. Tyus Jones paced the US with 22 on 9-11 from the floor, 0-1 from the arc, 4-4 from the line, 3 boards, 6 assists and 2 steals. Justice Winslow added 17 on 6-8 from the floor, 1-1 from the arc, 2-2 from the line, 13 boards, 2 assists and 3 steals. Canada’s defense was up to task as they were able to continue to shut the Chinese offence and limit them to only eleven points, while taking a 36-25 lead into the lockers. China began to chip away at the Canadian lead and finished the quarter with a 13-2 run to knot the score at 42. In the final frame, Justin Jackson hit his free-throws with 1:17 left on the clock to make it a nine-point game. China was then able to answer with three consecutive 3-pointers to cut the lead to three with 25 seconds left in the game but came no closer. In the fifth-place playoff, Canada defeated Argentina 84-79. Canada came out on a torrid pace, as Canada was able to jump on Argentina 14-2. They maintained their focus and led 32-22 after one quarter. But Argentina rallied to knot the score at 40 on a late 16-4 run in the second quarter before Canada hit a pair of buckets to take a 44-41 lead at the half. The score was knotted at 50 when Canada closed out the third quarter with a 16-7 run to take a 66-57 lead after three. Argentina was able to draw no closer than five in the final frame. Kevin-Mbeleza Zabo paced Canada with 26 on 10-20 from the floor, 0-1 from the arc, 6-7 from the line, 7 boards and 2 steals.
