In their opener, Canada clocked Mexico 90-44. Canada improved to (2-0) by stomped the Bahamas 88-69. “Canada’s Cadets showed the grit and fortitude to defeat a very tough opponent in the Bahamas,” said coach Roy Rana. “This was a great game for our kids as we had to battle through foul trouble and a strong Bahamian run in the second half. Negus Webster-Chan was incredible in the first half and had a great game on both sides of the court. Duane Notice was key to changing the tide of the game in the fourth quarter as he attacked the defence and changed the momentum.” Canada opened with a 22-2 run and led 32-6 after one quarter and 48-25 at the half. The Bahamas rallied to within 67-61 on a trey by Michael Carey with seven minutes left but Canada responded with an 11-0 run to seal the win. Canada then dropped an 87-81 decision in overtime to Argentina. “Our Cadet boys lost a heartbreaker in overtime to the home side Argentina in an epic international battle,” said coach Roy Rana. “I am even more impressed and proud of the passion showed battling against the home team who was supported by an incredible crowd. Our boys became men tonight and learned some great lessons about international basketball.” The teams played to a 23-23 tie after one quarter and Kevin Pangos hit a bucket with three seconds remaining as Canada moved ahead 41-40 at the half. Canada increased its lead to 48-42 in the third quarter but Tomas Zanzotera triggered a 10-0 run as Argentina inched ahead. The game was tied at 66 as Anthony Bennett caught fire, giving Canada a 75-74 lead with a minute to play. Valetin Marchisio hit a bucket at the buzzer to knot the score at 76 and force overtime. Argentina opened the extra session with an 8-0 run and coasted to the win. Carlos Benitez Gavilan paced Argentina with 17 on 5-6 from the floor, 7-10 from the line and 2 steals. In the semis, the United States whipped Canada 126-78. The US dominated the first four minutes 17-5 and finished the first quarter 35-21. They maintained a double-digit lead in the second quarter until Canada made an 11-3 run in the final two minutes to leave the first half score 57-48. The game was defined in the third quarter with a 30-5 run by USA to get an 87-53 lead with 2:42 left. USA never looked back. The US dominated the paint 76-30 and second-chance points 30-7. In the bronze medal match, Canada whipped Venezuela 106-81 to qualify for the 2010 world championships in Germany. “Right from the first day of training camp at the Air Canada Centre there was a real positive energy and chemistry amongst our Cadet athletes and staff,” said coach Roy Rana. “This incredible accomplishment for Canada was a true team effort and the results came together perfectly in our bronze medal victory against Venezuela.” Canada ripped off a late 11-2 run to take a 23-10 after one quarter. In the second, Venezuela managed to adjust its offence in an effort to cut the lead and rallied within 42-31 at the half. Canada dominated the third quarter and romped to the easy win. Kevin Pangos said the tournament was “a great learning experience for us. The tournament was an opportunity to test our skills against some of the best talent in the world.
