In the qualifying tournament, the winner of each pool is to qualify automatically for Barcelona. Second and third place finishers in each pool to cross over, with winners securing Olympic berths

China and the Commonwealth of Independent States qualify automatically for Barcelona.

Canada defeated Japan 82-69 as Karla Karch scored 20. Canada held a 38-32 halftime lead, but was ahead by just a point with four minutes remaining. However, Karch converted several shots in the final moments to clinch the victory.

Canada fell to (2-2) after losing 67-53 to Italy. Canada started well, taking an early seven-point lead in a physical contest. The Italians rallied and romped.

Canada lost 101-57 to the Commonwealth of Independent States. “The Russians are so strong,” Canadian coach Wayne Hussey said. “I just didn’t think we could accept the challenge.”

Canada defeated Mexico 82-57 to qualify for the playoff round.

In the 3-5th semis, Canada lost 79-64 to Czechoslovakia.

In the playoff for the last Olympic berth, Italy defeats Canada 66-44. Canada started well against Italy but the Italians took control midway through the first half and cruised. Head coach Wayne Hussey pinned the loss on officials Krzysztof Koralewski of Poland and Isaac Glass of Uruguay. “Sometimes when a team that’s not as strong defensively gets away with a lot of holding, it takes a more-skilled team out of its game. I think that’s what happened. It’s tough to talk like that because you don’t like to make it sound like sour grapes. But it’s frustrating when you work hard all year, only to be subjected to officiating like this.” Point guard Jodi Evans, who scored 8, said “this was our last chance and we blew it. We didn’t come out and show everyone how we can play and it showed up in the score.”
