Olympic qualifiers
A series of universality rules were implemented for the 2020 FIBA 3×3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament (which became the 2021 qualifying tournament as a result of the covid-19 pandemic) with a maximum of 10 teams per continent and a minimum of 30 different countries represented. Only the top 6 teams qualified for the OQT based on ranking could have a team both in men and women. The last 10 berths in each gender were allocated following the Federation Ranking list only if the respective country didn’t already have a team in any gender qualified. Therefore, Canada’s men (18th) advanced to the OQT as a result of a higher rank than the women (26th) in the FIBA 3×3 Federation ranking lists. FIBA’s ranking is based in part on the number of athletes a country has participating in the sport and the number of 3×3 events hosted by a country. So irrespective of the Canadian’s women’s tremendous success on the circuit, the Federation Internationale de Basketball (FIBA), and the International Olympic Committee considered them unworthy of qualification. 3×3 basketball made its Olympic debut in Tokyo. The tournament was originally scheduled to be held in Bangalore, India, but was shifted to Graz because of the covid-19 pandemic.
