The games were originally to have been held in Ekaterinburg, Russia, but FISU nixed that notion after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Chengdu, which was to have hosted the 2021 FISU Games, which were cancelled by the covid pandemic, was awarded host rights for 2023.

Canada opted not to participate “based on the travel and health risks to the Canadian student-athletes and the Canadian delegation participating in the Games.”
