In the final, the Whitehorse Vanier Crusaders captured their eighth consecutive crown by defeating the Porter Creek Rams 87-86. The Rams led 22-18 after one quarter and 46-39 at the half. But the Crusaders ripped off a 15-5 run in the third quarter to take a 54-51 lead. The score was knotted at 68 after three quarters. With 1:11 to play, the Crusaders led 87-81. The Rams answered with a pair of buckets and had a chance to knot the score with 3.2 seconds to play. But Rams guard Parker Hobbis only hit 1-2 from the line and the Crusaders grabbed the defensive board to hang on for the win. Crusaders coach Sean McCarron told the Yukon News that “we knew every team was going to be solid – it was going to be a battle. The focus was just to play really well all season, and we did. … Their (Porter Creek’s) advantage is obviously size and strength, and they went to that. We needed to match a little bit of that, and then the hope is eventually we get our legs, eventually we hit some shots, and the face that we were only down seven (at halftime) considering we were getting pushed around and had kids in foul trouble, at that point, you’re just trying to weather that run. You’re just trying to stay alive until we can get our shots. In the third quarter, we started hitting shots we have been hitting all season.” McCarron told the Whitehorse Daily that “that the focus was just to play really well all season and we did. When the battles get so heated … and I work them really hard, I’m tough on them. You want them to win, you want the Grade 12’s to walk away. There is pressure just because you feel for the boys and you want them to be rewarded. … Every team this year had their own personality. Ours is small, quick, hopefully, hit some shots and hope teams don’t go big. Porter Creek’s is size and strength and they went to that.”
